Boston College and Astroturf

Michael Pahre explains why BC's proposal to use Astroturf instead of grass on new athletic fields is a bad idea: Turns out rain can leach carcinogens out of the support material, and they would flow right into Chandler Pond.

Ed. question: But if they plant grass, wouldn't the fertilizer they'd presumably use also wind up in Chandler Pond, causing its own set of problems?

To answer your question - Yes, the fertilizer used on a grass field would also impact the pond. Not to mention the pesticides/herbicides to keep dandelions & other weeds away.

The website you link to raises concerns about drinking water which may have PAH's leached into it. I would say that drinking water out of Chandler Pond (or any other urban pond), would be a very bad idea whether or not an Astroturf field is built nearby.
