A traffic tie-up that really stinks

The Globe reports that a tractor trailer hauling garbage overturned at the interchange of Rte. 1 north and I-95 in Peabody during the morning rush hour today, closing the ramp.

Garbage trucks had to be called in to haul off the stuff. What happens if one of them overturns?

I commute down 95 and take the 128north ramp to go to centennial park in peabody (and then all the way to marblehead...) and passed the carnage this morning. It was about 8:45 this morning and traffic wasn't too bad. But no one was coming north. people I guess were being diverted up to the 114 exit off 95 to connect over to rte 1.

there were cranes, and fire trucks, and cop cars and garbage trucks and more big rigs and all kinds of insanity. I wish that traffic going my way had been stopped because i so would have taken a picture. it was quite the scene.

and it didn't smell. i had my window down, and there wasn't any stench to be found... which i thought was interesting. considering the cargo.

Time was, people around here knew the difference. Can't tell from that Globe article if it really was trash (which wouldn't stink) or garbage (which would).

Glad I'm not the only person who wishes for traffic jams to take pictures of weird stuff :-).

I grew up out west wearing pants with shoes (generic) and throwing things in the garbage - or trash, it didn't matter like the difference between garbage, recycling, and compost do.

My husband grew up trowing things in the "rubbish", "trash", "garbage" or probably fifteen other meaningless sub-categories of what got dumped into the same can and then into the ocean all together anyway. He did this while wearing (dress) shoes if it was sunday, sneakers, or twenty seven other meaningless subdesignations of footwear. These were matched to pants, slacks, dungarees (six dungarees of separation?), jeans, etc. etc. you name it, etc. etc.

Sillyness. Simplify already! You pull it on your legs - that is pants; you put it on your feet, then it is shoes, you toss it out and it is garbage. They all do same thing, they all go the same place, the rest is superficial puffery.

Where I grew up, food scraps and anything else from the kitchen went in the garbage pail. Everything else went into the wastebasket. It all went out to the street at the same time, but the garbage was carefully covered and kept separate.

In many Boston suburbs, trash got thrown in the landfill while garbage got sold to local pig farmers.

Now that makes sense. We separate food into veggie waste that goes to the composter, recycling for the recycle bins, and the rest for the can.

If you don't separate it, why call it different things?

Food scraps is different from compost, as it is all food not just compostable foods (vegetables, etc. and no protein items or oils). The local hog farm bought food scraps from the schools I attended in rural areas. We had to scrape the food scraps into one bin and then napkins went to the garbage/trash.
