Northeastern University announced tonight that it's reversed its decision to make 11 first-year students found in a room together forfeit roughly $28,000 in payments if they decide to re-enlist at the school for the spring - the money will instead go towards the cost of being at Northeastern then. City Councilor Kenzie Bok, who represents the normally student-heavy Fenway and Mission Hill, is urging the city's two largest universities to reverse course and not let any students come to Boston for at least the fall semester - saying the greatest potential risk to Boston is "the sheer influx" of people from out of state, many from places with far higher Covid-19 rates. Northeastern University has told the BPDA it has increased the number of rooms it wants to rent to house students and the staffers who would oversee them at the Westin Copley Place from roughly 575 to as many as 875 - which would mean up to 19 floors in the hotel being set aside for Northeastern. Northeastern University says it hopes to take over the entire Midtown Hotel and to lease floors in the Westin Copley Place to serve as dorms after eliminating on-campus triples and similar spaces and setting aside 500 campus rooms to quarantine any students who contract Covid-19. Read more.

A video that has widely circulated over the past day has been presented as evidence cops in Boston were getting ready to leave bricks around to tempt protesters to throw them.

In fact, Northeastern Police say today, it shows two Northeastern officers doing something far more innocuous. Read more.

Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun announced today that the school's dormitories and classrooms will be open for the fall semester - even if that means expanding the number of buildings the school owns or rents to house students in a more socially-distancing setting and starting up "large-scale deployment of testing and contact tracing." After telling students they could stay in their dorms for the rest of the semester - even if they were taking their classes remotely like everybody else - Northeastern told students today they have to vacate their dorms by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Read more.
