Getting a toddler a present somewhere other than Target

Johnmcboston asks:

Looking for unique gift for 2yo. Any fun/toy/kid stores left in Boston? Or is Target all we have?

You must go to Boing! Centre St. JP. You will NOT be disappointed. These toys will make children smart.

But bear in mind that this truck isn't suitable for a two-year old (some of them still eat/choke on small parts). Future Christmases?

There's Kids R Kids in West Roxbury and another location of Stellabella at Legacy Place (my favorite). Boing! has a super helpful staff as well. You can totally go in there and be like, "I need a gift for a 2-year-old. Help." and they'll hook you up.

Blue Bunny Bookstore in Dedham and Paper Source at Legacy Place and in Brookline have children's gifts too.

It's on Harvard Street. Really nice staff and good mix of toys. Highly recommend the pull-along wooden dogs by Janod if they still sell them! The tub toys have been big hits as well.

in Porter Square. Henry Bear's Park, Stellabella Toys, Magic Beans, etc., are all nice, but they also have basically the same toys from the same selection of brands as any other similar toy store in America. Magpie actually has unique things from independent artists (as well as a selection from larger brands.)

seldom appreciate unique gifts. They'd probably be happier with a large Uhaul box full of three tupperwares and a box of old pasta.

True, they may not remember a lot. I was looking for something more than a cheap plastic toy - twitter only allows so many characters though. :)

good gift for little kids. They like taking them out and putting them in the cans.

Thanks to twitter and UH for all the suggestions. Been a long time since I shopped for a young one, and was hoping to find something more than the standard cheap plastic stuff that I might find at a Target (As nice a store that it is).

A lot of good suggestions. Tried Magic Beans, but it's a bit of a small store with limited selection. Then went to Henry bear in Brookline Village and got some nice wooden toys.

I'll definitely visit some of the other suggestions to see what they carry. Glad to see there are so many options out there!!!!

Glad you went to Henry Bear's Park, they have wonderful toys, well organized, and you can do older kids there too because they have a great selection of Legos and Playmobil (and science-oriented toys). Definitely check out Boing next time you are looking, their customer service is excellent and they have a great selection. Boing also gives a LOT back to the community and is owned by a local parent.

Even though we currently have no one who needs to be shopped for there.

Tonight I was talking about how amazing I thought Toys Are Us was when I first went there as a kid (we were driving by the Dedham Ocean State Job Lot at the time) and how, even today, a full sized one blows my mind away. That said, my 2 trips to Moody Street as a lad to get my Force Five toys were unforgettable. Yes, not as big, but amazing things there.

The Construction Zone.

Liked it much more than Toy R Us (TM).

The Shop at Boston Children's Museum is another good option.
