Immediate need for an inflatable kayak

Scott Eisen asls:

Anyone know where I can buy a inflatable kayak today, locally, near Boston? And I don’t mean the $600+ ones at REI… lol

Eisen, a photographer, updated his query to specify it has to be inflatable so he can fit it in his car, after Ocean State Job Lot responded they have the non-squishable kind.

Er, storm coming?

I hope he's taking it with him on a airplane going somewhere tropical and needs to get out before the storm; it is NOT going to be kayaking weather around Boston for the next couple of days!!

would be that he wants to navigate flooded streets or the like as opposed to open water

I was mostly joking about kayaking on commercial street

But I have a sea kayak, spray skirt, 7mil wetsuit for surfing and a fair bit of experience.

I bought my kayak on Craigslist - kayak with rudder, werner paddle, spray skirt $425. I just replaced the paddle. Craigslist can be an excellent resource for not spending too much and getting good gear.

If he is planning anything epic, he does not want a cheap yak.

Hopefully by now people would know that. Especially in this area since the high turnover rate (think college) tends to flood the CL market with shit kids dont want to lug around from apt to apt (I cant speak on kayaking gear) but i have definetly have had some success for things like an AC ($25 for a 24000 BTU "master blaster" as they say. I think the was more relieved that he didn't have to haul that heavy ass AC down like 6 floors)

You're right about that latter, but...your yak IS a cheap yak. Glad it works for you.

I'm the cheap one

The Yak itself was not. Necky Looksha 14' with rudder kit retailed for upwards of $1600 at the time. The Werner paddle was probably $250-$300 new (older than the boat, though) and the spray skirt another $50. $1900 new.

It was three years old at the time (2011) and the owner had left it with her brother to sell. He dropped the price because it was October already and several people came to look at it and didn't fit in the boat (it was limited to a paddler under 5'6 and size 16 pants). I got out of the car and he smiled - I was so close to his sister's size that I didn't have to adjust anything - not even the skirt suspenders.

So, yes, very cheap for a solid boat and gear that have given me no trouble in seven years. I got a new paddle for Christmas because the old one was getting pretty worn on the shaft.

Just wait, perhaps one will fall off of a helicopter and crash through the roof. (really did just happen, not making it up!)

I've been looking for one as well

Not for this weekend but to tool around Narragansett Bay this spring. Any sporting goods store will have them...Dicks, EMS even Walmart has a few.
I'm looking for a non inflatable tandem so my options are a bit limited.

Check sales at REI Outlet, LL Bean, etc.

We picked up a 14' Necky Manitou 2 tandem (aka "The Orca") with rudder at REI outlet for $900 a few years back.

Dick's has a nice line of off brand but sturdy looking yaks, and Costco even has them now and again.

After the nor’easter storm is over a lot of people will be asking the Government “Where’s F.E.M.A.”

Two Answers

1. FEMA doesn't usually get involved unless the states ask them to. So Gov. Baker and MEMA would have to call them in.
2. Climate Change and the increasing prospect of coastal flooding are being incorporated into the FEMA Hazard Mitigation plans that most cities and some towns create every 5 years.
