I made Christmas tamales a few years ago, and bought the masa from Romano's Pizza and Taqueria. Probably only convenient if you live in Roslindale, but you might try any local taco joint to see whether they can sell you some. There's was perfect and really cheap.

Masa is really interesting stuff, and I recommend looking up some background on it. A combination of food chemistry and ancient culinary techniques makes corn much more nutritious and tasty.
