Busted bollards

Seems somebody didn't know how to stop at the end of Cummins Highway in Roslindale Square early this morning and plowed right into the entrance of Adams Park. A couple of concerned citizens filed complaints about the poor cleanup by the DPW at what is a main entrance to the morning's farmers' market, which, as we know, is one of the biggest in the city.

Farmer's market is happening with lots of people and it seems a bit dangerous.

Shanti on Washington Street today asked the Boston Licensing Board for a beer and wine license to serve the people who are now getting their Indian food elsewhere because they want something more adult than soda.

"It's rather slow in that location," restaurant attorney Sean Hope told the board. Owner Solmon Chowdhury said he gets four or five calls a day from prospective diners asking whether they can get a beer or glass of wine with their meals at the new restaurant. Chowdhury has long operated another Shanti in Dorchester with a beer and wine license

Apparently, the Discovery Channel thinks America hasn't gotten enough of South Boston and is readying a series based on a book written by a former IRA gun runner and associate of murdering thug Whitey Bulger, only this time, a Southie crew will battle rivals from Roslindale and Dorchester for, oh, who the hell cares, it's going to suck.

As of 10 p.m., parts of Roslindale, Hyde Park, Roxbury and Dorchester were without power.

Parts of the western side of South Boston went dark when a manhole on West 1 St. between B and C went kablooie. NStar was unable to provide an estimate for when workers could get down there for a look.

Firefighters responded to 320 W. 2 St., where the power outage stranded a man and his dog in an elevator between the fourth and fifth floors. Tom McGuire reports they were rescued.

Tammy sings the praises of the weekend brunch at Sophia's Grotto in Roslindale, especially when it's nice enough for the courtyard patio.

And note how she couldn't sneak the place into some scenester magazine's review of al-fresco brunch spots because the editor and "creative director" insisted Roslindale isn't "Boston."

Note the destination for the 51 on this sign Dani B. spotted at Washington and Lochdale in Roslindale. Hmm, also note the destination for the 40, as long as you're at it.

Happened to be up at 5:10 a.m. here in Roslindale and heard a rooster crowing from somewhere in the direction of Washington, Beech and Walworth. Guess I better get going on that back 40.

From West Roxbury to East Boston, Nstar cables and transformers failed last night, plunging residents into steamy darkness.

"Faulty equipment" sparked an outage in the Centre Street corridor from West Roxbury into Jamaica Plain last night.

On Prescott Street in East Boston, Kathy Bui reports power went out around midnight, finally came back around 5:30 p.m.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette clucks that neighborhood zoning would trump a proposed citywide ordinance revamp to promote urban agriculture, and neighborhood zoning in JP and Roslindale, under which backyard chickens are not allowed to come home to roost, would trump that.

The Roslindale House of Pizza on Washington Street is now advertising soft-serve ice-cream, potentially saving people north of Adams Park from the walk all the way up to Jimmies for some soft ice cream. People with a yen for the hard stuff, however, will still have to trek to Jimmies or Select Cafe.

Roving UHub reporter Jeff F. filed this report from Roslindale around 7 p.m.:

Just got back from a run to the Village Market and there was a film crew and some actor-type folks on the roof of the building. Talked to a couple people standing and watching and they said the crew was filming some sort of "gangster" piece about Southie using Rosi locations - one fellow claimed he had gotten a haircut at Rialto earlier and they had been filming there too.

Last pizza from M.J.'s

Jen Langley's last MJ's pie, ordered last night.

MJ's, which has been dishing up pizza and subs for nearly 40 years, closes Sunday. Steve O'Malley, the owner, is retiring.

MJ's started on Hyde Park Avenue, moved to Belgrade Avenue near Walworth, then moved down Belgrade to the West Roxbury line after a fire.

Katie Schilling, for one, is sad to see MJ's go, calling O'Malley "a saint:"

Helped a lot of people over the years who were down on their luck. Sad news!

Kathy Cahill adds:

what a shame! My kids love it! Thanks to Steve and staff, nice people.

Mapping BostonThe map-happy folks at Bostonography have updated their work on using crowdsourcing to solve that most vexing of problems: What exactly are the boundaries of Boston neighborhoods?

We asked people to draw boundaries for 21 Boston neighborhoods and have overlaid the resulting shapes (about 4,800 from 950 respondents) to measure the amount of overlap and calculate consensus within each neighborhood.

There's a mini-FAQ that includes this question: "Why is Roslindale so ill-defined?" They say it's mainly due to not enough data, but any Roslindale resident will tell you it's actually a valid question - pieces of the neighborhood secede to get higher property values, other pieces get lumped into city-council districts with Dorchester, we don't have any elected officials of our own, etc., etc.

H/t eeka.

The School Committee is considering making the Haley School a K-8 school, a move some parents fear could undercut plans for an innovative feeder program in which Roslindale fifth graders at six schools were given higher priority for seats at the Irving Middle School.
