The City Council yesterday unanimously approved using eminent domain to take roughly an acre of undeveloped land on the shore of Sprague Pond for a park, after one councilor assured the others that city officials will offer a fair price to the current owners - a key concern in a city with a history of eminent domain being used to destroy whole neighborhoods for apartment towers and highways. They've already screamed their lungs out at the young children of the mayor, so the anti-vax brigade decided to mix it up this morning, by going to City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo's mother's house in Hyde Park and screaming at her even though Arroyo himself no longer lives there - and was not there this morning. Three city councilors of color today expressed hesitancy over a proposed ordinance that would prohibit targeted protests outside the mayor's house early in the morning, saying that while they understand what it's like to be hit with racist bile, they're not sure they have enough faith in Boston Police to not then turn the rule against Black Lives Matter and other protesters. Arroyo: Social-equity lens needed for Boston dog-park needs.
City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) says it's way past time for Boston to begin installing dog parks outside the "high income neighborhoods" he says have them now - and that the city should be planning them first, rather than waiting for organized groups of dog owners with discretionary income to push for them. The City Council yesterday approved a request by Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan) to look into how to get the city to build dog parks south of the Fenway, where he said dog-owning residents deserve the same facilities as those in the South End, the North End, Dorchester and other neighborhoods that already have dog parks.
