Can you blame a Masshole for catching up with some reading?

Old logo for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority

You oldtimers will remember when the turnpike had giant toll cards featuring a grinning Pilgrim with an arrow through his head, sitting atop a map of the turnpike. I haven't been able to find a copy of one of those, but yesterday, while walking into the North End to take another photo, I happened upon what looks to be an original brick turnpike tollbooth (UPDATE: Supervisor booth, see the comments), in front of the old tunnel administration building on North Street.

By itself, it's kind of an interesting little building, but it also sports the turnpike's two original logos - one showing Paul Revere ("The Nash Ramblers are coming! The Nash Ramblers are coming!"), the other featuring this green arrow through the Pilgrim hat that was allegedly how founding turnpike honcho William Callahan (our version of Robert Moses) chose to stick it to the Brahmins.

Imagine the bidding war between the makers of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra for this sign near the end of the turnpike:

Rising interest?

No, not because they've raised the speed limit, but because they've added two more FastLanes to the sprawling plaza:

Phillip Daniels, 33, is due for arraignment Monday morning in Boston Municipal Court on charges of motor-vehicle homicide and operating under the influence causing bodily injury, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says.

According to the DA's office, it looks like Daniels drove west on the eastbound side of the turnpike, striking another car near the Prudential tunnel around 2 a.m., killing the passenger and sending the driver to Mass. General in critical condition.

Innocent, etc.

Sean Sullivan reports eastbound traffic on the turnpike near the Allston/Cambridge tolls came to a complete stop after this rollover shortly before 6 p.m. yesterday. Anybody know what happened to the occupant(s)?

If you're looking at this Sunday afternoon/evening, you're probably not stuck at it.

A woman driving down the turnpike this morning ended up at St. Elizabeth's when a piece of an overpass came crashing down on her car, Channel 4 reports.

I probably missed an earlier story or something, but this Herald piece kinda rates a fail because it says the feds are investigating possible safety issues at new RMV offices at the Charlton and Natick rest stops without ever saying what those safety issues are. Anybody know?

Channel 4 reports a guy speeding westbound on the turnpike early this morning lost control of his car, which sailed through the air into an empty toll booth at the Weston plaza and then burst into flames.

With photo of the newly impaled car.

Warns it will shut down tunnels, highways it controls inside 128 if anti-toll people get a restraining order in court today. You know, like the entire Big Dig complex.
