WBUR reports on an AARP list of 14 state reps who signed a pledge last year to retain the state's ban on gifts to doctors by drug companies - then voted this week to end the ban. Among them: Ed Coppinger.

The State House News Service has announced a 128-22 vote in favor of repealing a gift ban instituted by the state only 3 years ago. This ban prevented pharmaceutical and medical device companies from lobbying doctors with gifts like dinners and other free swag.

Opponents of the ban claim it hurts the local restaurant industry because they can't spend lavish amounts of money on dinners for doctors to hear the wonderous benefits of their products. However, the article doesn't mention how much money must have been spent by these same lobbyists at Beacon Hill restaurants instead in order to convince the current House to vote in favor of this gift ban repeal. In fact, supporters argue that the local economy and convention center hasn't been hurt at all by the ban. They argue that meal tax revenue is up and the BCEC has plans to grow.

As a candidate for state representative in West Roxbury, Roslindale and Brookline, I have had the opportunity to meet several remarkable people in our neighborhood. The 10th boasts a high percentage of active and retired public safety personnel, and I am proud to count many as supporters. As a Massachusetts National Guardsman and a former 911 operator with the Boston Police, I am keenly aware of the importance of public safety.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette interviews Joel Pentlarge, treasurer for JP state-rep candidate Jeffrey Herman. Pentlarge pleaded guilty to five counts of rape and abuse of a child in 2000; he says it was statutory rape, not the other kind, and he served his time and that shouldn't affect his desire to do bookkeeping for a local political candidate.
