Roslindale

Wayne Wilson was a good man who passed away on November 15, 2013. Wayne was a resident of Ward 19 in Jamaica Plain and was a hardcore Progressive Democrat who was traveling around his State Senate District visiting the local Democrats in effort to challenge Mike Rush for the Senate seat in the September 9, 2014 Democratic Primary. Wayne was very active in local Democratic politics. I last saw him on November 12, 2013 at the Ward 19 Democrats where he was an active member in Karen Paine's organization.

The owner of Jimmies on Corinth writes she'd love to move into the old Select Cafe - or someplace else in Roslindale that's larger than her current location.

Oh, and don't worry we will get great bagels.

Hank Layfield reports Domino's is moving into the old BBQ Town on Washington Street in Roslindale, which means the local franchise will finally be free of the loneliness that is that little strip mall down by the West Roxbury Parkway and well away from those activist types in Roslindale Square who managed to block its planned move into a storefront there.

No more Select Cafe

Select Cafe, which started out as an Emack & Bolio's ice-cream shop, then became a coffeehouse complete with open-mic nights, before gradually turning into a daytime gathering spot for the neighborhood's Albanian men, shut this week.

The old Emack ice-cream signs are down from the walls of the cafe across from the commuter-rail station; much of the rest of the shop now sits in piles near the back.

H/t Ezra Freedman for noticing the demise.

Roslindale Square resident Adam Kessel reports Brooklyn Water Bagels considered Roslindale Square for a new outlet but opted to open in Framingham instead because the area just doesn't have enough foot traffic to support one of its shops.

Retail chains considering urban areas such as Roslindale Village tend to want heavy foot traffic - unlike in suburbs such as Framingham, where they rely more on car traffic, he says.

Police are hunting a man who fired shots out of a car at 108 Glendower Rd. shortly after 8 p.m. - one day after at least three people in the normally sleepy neighborhood were held up at gunpoint.

The shooter didn't hit any people. He's described as black and driving a car with a silver top and a black body, possibly a Dodge Charger. Police shut the one-way street for their investigation.

A group of men robbed a man around 10:30 p.m., Thursday on the Blakemore Street bridge over the train tracks. He was beaten with a gun, then ordered to take off his clothes - which the group then threw over the side of the bridge.

This robbery was around the same time a clerk at a Washington Street liquor store was also being pistol whipped and robbed.

Following David Bernstein's lead, the Globe today reports on the mystery Roslindale woman who set up a PAC to run ads supporting Marty Walsh. Turns out the woman couldn't find a voting booth if her life depended on it, yet she's raised lots of money from people she refuses to identify for these "independent" ads.

Creepy space saver

Or maybe whoever put out this space saver on Cornell Street could care less about Halloween and is just warning you what will happen if you dare to try to park in front of his house, lack of snow be damned.

A Little Caesar's is opening on American Legion Highway, one door down from Simco.

It'll be interesting to see how long it lasts. Aside from Domino's, which has been around forever, Boston's more rural districts don't much cotton to chain pizza - anybody remember the Papa John's in West Roxbury? But if it can survive anywhere, American Legion might be it, given that it's turning into the fast-food equivalent of the Auto Mile: Besides the Simco, there's a McDonald's, a KFC, a Popeye's and a Wendy's (oh, and a Dunkin' Donuts).

It's very difficult to find a place to eat then. Thank goodness for the Westbury in West Roxbury (at 6 a.m., somebody was just lifting the security grate at the Robinwood in JP),

As for why I was driving around the City that Always Sleeps at that ungodly hour, well, had to get the kidlet to school for a field trip. A field trip to Williamstown.
