Dr. Anita Barry on the meningitis case at BLA.

A 12-year-old Boston Latin Academy student is "very, very, seriously, critically ill" with bacterial meningitis, but poses no risk to most other students, a city public-health official says.

A school nurse recognized symptoms of the potentially fatal disease when the seventh grader came into her office Friday not feeling well and had her rushed to a local hospital, Dr. Anita Barry, director of infection control at the Boston Public Health Commission said this morning.

But plans to move Fenway High School somewhere, the Globe reports.

By adamg - 10/11/11 - 3:48 pm

Students, joined by some parents and staffers, staged a brief sit-in on the steps of Boston Latin Academy, which the school department wants to move into the shuttered Hyde Park High School, which would mean the city wouldn't have completely wasted $42 million in renovations made in Hyde Park a couple years back. The BPS plan would then have the Boston Arts Academy, currently in the Fenway, move into the BLA building.

Although Superintendent Carol Johnson has the final say, she has said she wants to wait until after the School Committee discusses the plan. A committee discussion planned for tomorrow night has been postponed until Oct. 24.

City Councilor John Tobin wants a year-long residency requirement just to take the ISEE test that helps determine whether a kid gets accepted into either of the two Latin schools or the O'Bryant.

Ed. Note: Despite what the story, in a Boston newspaper, says, it only takes sweat and tears - and hard work - to get into an exam school. No blood is normally shed.

Nothing found, of course, after somebody called and said they "had stuff all over the building."

Mike Ball's son goes to Boston Latin Academy, which went into "safe mode" (as opposed to "lockdown") today:

The 14-year-old came one today with a little smirk, a twitch over the police at Boston Latin Academy. It seems some kid brought in a live shotgun shell and left it in a john.

By cracky, in my day, the punks would pull a fire alarm and we'd head outside and stare at each other for a half hour. Today's version may involve a phoned in bomb threat, or in this case, a puerile catalytic piece of rubbish. ...
