Aaron Lecklider, chairman of the American Studies department at UMass Boston is not real happy with the news that the UMass system has found upwards of $50 million to buy the Amherst campus a Newton outpost even as the Boston campus is cutting departments and laying off staff:

The Mt. Ida campus will be used not by (minority-majority, working-class) UMass Boston, but rather by (predominantly white, middle-class) UMass Amherst in order to give their student body access to Boston internships. In other words, the UMass system wants to facilitate internships in Boston for students in Amherst while depriving resources to the 18,000 students on the existing campus in Boston. The Amherst campus will now have a campus in Boston that is literally segregated from the existing Boston campus. ...

James Dickey, the owner of a fire-ruined shell of a former house at 97 Mt. Ida Rd. in Dorchester, today filed an appeal of a federal judge's decision that he stop bothering federal judges with his attempts to keep the city from tearing down what's left of the structure, which the city says now exists solely as a haven for rats. Ever since Roche Bros. in West Roxbury re-opened its seafood department before Valentine's Day, one lobster went unsold: The biggest of them all, a lobster so large the other lobsters crowded around the edges of the tank just to stay away from him, so large that shoppers would bring their kids over to see him.

The poor plight of the lobster began to bother some people over in Roslindale, who used a neighborhood Facebook group to begin to ponder doing something about Larry's fate - yes, of course they named him Larry. Read more.

Old bank branch in Uphams Corner

The city is soliciting bids from people who think they could really do something with the old Bank of America branch at 555 Columbia Rd. in Uphams Corner for the 12 to 18 months it would otherwise sit empty until the city puts up a new library branch there.

A man was fatally shot around 4 p.m. on Evans Street, near Hopkins Street, Scott Eisen reports. Boston Police report the man was in his 30s and was declared dead at the scene.

This is Boston's 12th murder of the year.

Sean Ingram, 64, had bail set at $500 today at his arraignment on charges of OUI, second offense, leaving the scene of a property-damage collision, assault with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle) and resisting arrest for an incident yesterday on Gallivan Boulevard in Dorchester, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Around 10:20 a.m., police responded to the Shell station at Quincy Street and Blue Hill Avenue, where they found a man who had made his way there after being shot further down Quincy Street, near Perth Street - about an hour after another man was shot on Quincy.

UPDATE: Victim identified as Michael Ross, known to his friends as Pac Man. He was 34.

Boston Police report a man in his mid-30s was fatally shot at 120 Quincy St., near Dacia, around 9:10 a.m. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Read more.

As a jury heard testimony against one Boston police officer charged with beating an Uber driver, a Suffolk County grand jury was releasing an indictment charging another cop with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for a New Year's Day crash in which he was allegedly drunk. Read more.

A federal judge has given federal authorities permission to seize all the equipment belonging to B87 FM, an unlicensed music station operating at 87.7 FM out of an abandoned theater at 616-624 Blue Hill Ave. now owned by the New Fellowship Baptist Church of Dorchester. Read more.

The Board of Appeals yesterday approved a developer's plans to replace a small junkyard at 1837-1841 Dorchester Ave. with a four-story building with ten apartments and a small space for a business. Read more.

UPDATE: Victim identified as Anthony Young, 33.

Boston Police report a man was stabbed at 7 Cushing Ave. in Dorchester around 3 a.m. The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim is Boston's 10th murder victim this year.

Boston Police report arresting a 29-year-old Winthrop woman after they say officers watched her buy some heroin at a Dorchester Kentucky Fried Chicken - and her 70-year-old companion, whom they say was packing a loaded gun and driving an SUV equipped with an "AR-15 style" rifle, ten clips for it and body armor. Emmanuel Callwood, 34, was sentenced to 8 to 10 years in state prison today following his conviction on charges he stabbed a man in the lobby of the victim's apartment building,, then took his keys and dragged him up and down a hallway trying the keys to find his apartment, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
