A grand jury has indicted Corey Patterson for the knifing murder of a man who'd just left the former Allston bar, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Patterson originally fled the scene Nov. 8 as Gregory Phillips of West Roxbury lay dying of a fatal wound to the heart, but returned when he realized his fingerprints would be all over the bloody knife, Suffolk County prosecutors charge. Patterson was originally charged as an accessory rather than with being the murderer.

The Boston Licensing Board votes today on transferring the Kells' liquor license to Tavern in the Square, which plans to gut the place and convert it from a nightclub into a sports bar with an extensive menu.

At a hearing yesterday, Tavern in the Square lawyer Robert Allen of Brookline said that assuming the transfer is approved, the new owners will pay $1.4 million just to get in the door - which includes $250,000 for the value of the liquor license and $100,000 in "good will."

The Boston Licensing Board tomorrow hears from the owners of the Kells on Brighton Avenue on their plan to sell the bar's liquor license to the Tavern in the Square chain.

Today, though, the board heard what could be the last police complaint related to the bar: That it served a drink near closing time on Dec. 13 to an underage guy using his older brother's out of state license e- who then got knocked unconscious by a bar worker rushing outside to deal with a possible fight.

Boston Restaurant Talk has learned from Phantom Gourmet that The Kells in Allston will be closing in the near future. It seems that Tavern in the Square will be taking over the space. There is also a very telling discussion at Yelp concerning the closing.

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports a bouncer was charged with assault after a melee on Jan. 24. He told police he was trying to break up a fight among three women and was pushed to the ground on top of one of them; that woman wound up with a head laceration. Hmm, were there any rap shows across the street that night?

Managers at the Kells on Brighton Avenue told the Boston Licensing Board today they've beefed up security to deal with problems from what they said were trouble-causing elements from other parts of the city attracted to the neighborhood by rap concerts at other establishments.

The board held a hearing today on three incidents at the bar, most recently, a fatal stabbing of a bar patron down the street at Harvard and Brighton avenues. The board will decide Thursday what to do about the incidents.

Since September, the Kells has had at least four violent incidents linked to it, most recently this past weekend's murder that prosecutors say started as an argument inside the Brighton Avenue bar. Here's a rundown of these incidents linked to the bar, which members of the Boston Licensing Board said is not a trouble spot:

The Boston Licensing Board will hold a hearing sometime next month to consider this weekend's murder that prosecutors say started as an argument inside The Kells on Brighton Avenue.

Board Chairman Daniel Pokaski said today there was no need for an emergency hearing on the issue, in part because press reports indicated the fight that led to Gregory Phillips' death happened outside the bar, in part because there are no other outstanding issues with it. It typically takes about a month to schedule a hearing, he said.

"We do not consider them to be a troublespot," board member Michael Connolly said. Pokaski agreed, praising the Kells for its "level-headed" management.

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports a woman from Syracuse, NY ended a dispute over a friend's tab at the Kells on Oct. 18 by throwing a stool at the bartender and then returning in her GMC Denali and threatening to use her "toolie" to shoot the place up.
