The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld Charlie Brea's first-degree murder conviction for shooting a man to death during a fight he wasn't initially a part of outside the Breezeway on Blue Hill Avenue in 2010, ruling that even discounting mistakes by the judge and the prosecutor at trial, the evidence was just too overwhelming and the jury would have convicted him anyway. A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Charlie Brea, 32, of South Boston, of first-degree murder for the death of Luis Montanez, who simply had the bad luck to be standing outside the old Breezeway bar on Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury when a fistfight erupted. Read more.

The owner of the Breezeway, 153 Blue Hill Ave., goes before the Boston Licensing Board on May 2 for permission to sell his liquor license to a proposed Brazilian meat place in the Back Bay.

The move would leave Packy Connors as the only bar on Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury and Mattapan. The Avenue Tavern in Mattapan Square shut in 2010.

The Boston Licensing Board decides Thursday what to do about a March disturbance at the Breezeway, 153 Blue Hill Ave., that police say took all 13 of District B-2's street officers and two police dogs to break up.

B-2 Sgt. James Moore described a rumble that began as an all out melee inside, then spilled outside, after an unruly patron was escorted out around 1:40 a.m. on March 9.

A closing-time fight that left two cops surrounded by a couple dozen brawlers outside the Breezeway on April 4 could be the final straw for the bar, which has now had three hearings in three weeks on various incidents before the Boston Licensing Board.

"Why does your licensed premise deserve to have basically every officer in that district policing your premise when it closes?" board Chairman Daniel Pokaski asked owner Christ Stamatos at a hearing this morning. "You can't control your crowd, it's as simple as that. You can't do it."

The Boston Licensing Board today considered incidents outside bars in Roxbury and Fort Point Channel that police said may be linked to the board's decision last year to reduce the hours at Packy Connors on Blue Hill Avenue.
