A federal judge said today he hopes to rule by April 15 on a lawsuit against the Boston School Committee's system for examless selection of exam-school students either in time for students to get notified of their selection this spring - or to order officials to quickly come up with a new way of selecting students for the schools before the fall. A federal judge today held off any action on a bid by a group of White and Asian-American parents to block the way the Boston school system plans to enroll students in the three exam schools until at least March 16 to give the two sides - and lawyers for groups representing Black, Latino and other Asian-American parents - time to try to agree on the basic facts of the case. A Milton woman was arraigned today on charges of attempted murder and reckless endangerment of a child for the way prosecutors say she abandoned her newborn son in a trash barrel outside Pat's Pizza a few doors down and not long after she gave birth to him, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. WBUR reports an 8-year-old from Jamaica Plain with PTSD has spent more than a month basically warehoused at Children's Hospital because there are no free beds anywhere in the state.

"Basically, he's just sitting in a room playing with Legos all day and watching TV and playing video games," she added.

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department and a civil-engineering firm have started redesigning the 20-year-old playground near the top of Millennium Park in West Roxbury in a project that could also mean replacing the park's seasonal portable toilets with a more permanent restroom building. The Canton Fire Department reports a 7-year-old boy from Rockland suffered serious injuries when he fell 35 feet from a ski lift at the Blue Hills Ski Area around 4:20 p.m. Canton paramedics transported the boy to a nearby field at Meditech on Blue Hill River Road, from which a helicopter flew him to Children's Hospital in Boston.

The department says that while serious, the boy's injuries were not considered life threatening.

WBZ reports the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has dropped a requirement that students need to get a flu shot, partly because there has been so little flu this season, partly because it needs to concentrate on getting people vaccinated against Covid-19 rather than on checking flu-shot compliance.
