A judge yesterday sided with Northeastern University over the town of Nahant, ruling a state law aimed at protecting land set aside for conservation does not apply to the school's plans to expand its Marine Research Land on some long vacant land it owns in the town. Read more.

Joan was at Nahant Beach this afternon when the storm showed up and just burst right over her head. She managed to get a couple of good shots "just before we grabbed our stuff and made a mad dash for the car."

DCR reported today that lion's-mane jellyfish have floated into the waters off Carson Beach in South Boston, Wollaston Beach in Quincy and Nahant Beach in, well, Nahant. Read more.

WBZ reports Nahant residents voted overwhelmingly yesterday to block Northeastern from expanding a marine research center by taking eight acres of the site by eminent domain. The center has focused in recent years on how to help coastal communities deal with rising sea levels, but Nahant, bolstered by an anonymous $3-million gift to take the land, said: Nah.

In their all-black wetsuits in the dreary gray water of Nahant Bay this afternoon, some surfers looked like nothing so much as mimes on boards. Crazy mimes on the verge of hypothermia, to be exact, but maybe those suits are warmer than they look.
