Roving UHub photographer Mary Ellen captured a couple of folks who set up hammocks by Leverett Pond in Olmsted Park to enjoy the day today.

Fans of cold, bitter snow, though, may only have to wait until the end of the week to be back in their element.

With a National Weather Service excessive heat warning going into effect at noon today, Boston has declared a heat emergency through Sunday evening.

If you need help finding a place to cool off, call 311. The City of Boston operates outdoor and indoor pools, splash pads and spray decks, and several beaches in Boston at which you can cool off.

At 12:15 a.m., it was 86 at Logan Airport. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through Wednesday night - we can expect temps in the 90s with our bodies thinking it's closer to 105 due to the humidity.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Unbearable heat in Chinatown

Gloucester greasy pole

Greg Cook took in the 91st St. Peter's fiesta in Gloucester, the one where people try to get to the end of a greasy pole off a platform in the harbor and grab a flag.

From Harvard and Brandeis to landlords in downtown Boston, people are being asked to turn off lights and close blinds to help conserve energy so that the operator of the regional power grid doesn't have to take more extreme measures to help its electrical grid deal with all the added demand from air conditioners.

The City Hall to Go Truck will be at 460 West Broadway in South Boston between 4 and 7 p.m., with workers handing out free bottles of cold water - and listening to you dispute your parking tickets and pay your excise and property taxes.

At 5, there's a free ice-cream party at the Mildred Avenue Community Center, 1 Mildred Ave. in Mattapan, featuring the Boston Police Department ice-cream truck stocked with lots of Hoodsie cups.

At 6, the truck toodles over to Gertrude Howes Park, 33 Fairland St., Roxbury, to hand out more Hoodsies to people taking free chess lessons under the park's shade trees.

The Worcester Line has trouble in cold weather. It also has trouble in warm weather - the MBTA just announced speed restrictions on the line because of the high temperatures.
