Controversial JP coffeehouse could get license this week

Caffe Nero could get a food-serving license for an outlet on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain on Thursday, although the mayor's office is seeking a delay in any licensing until after chain officials meet with the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council's public-service committee next week.

Some neighborhood groups have given their backing to the proposed cafe next to Blanchard's, but the Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association is fighting the plan because they fear it would be the beginning of a tide of national chains overflowing the neighborhood.

JP Neighborhood Council agrees to stop fighting Little Wanderers project

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports the council has voted to give up its legal battle to be declared a city agency, a declaration without which it can't fight the project to turn the former orphan's home on South Huntington Avenue into condos. On the plus side, if the council isn't a city agency, it can once again argue it's not subject to the state Open Meeting Law and so shut residents out of meetings whenever it feels like it.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports only 12 people signed up to run for the 20 total seats on the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council in its October elections. But don't worry, drama fans: One of the people now guaranteed a return trip to the council is Benjamin Day, the guy responsible for that ever popular guessing game: Is the council a public agency or not?

JP group continues to tie up South Huntington Avenue housing develpment

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports it could take 18 months for the Massachusetts Appeals Court to consider and rule on the JP Neighborhood Council's request to be deemed a city agency, which would then let it sue to stop the Home for Little Wanderers project. A Superior Court judge ruled earlier this year the group is not a government agency and so has no grounds to sue to overturn the project's zoning approval, since none of its members actually live next to it.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports a Suffolk Superior Court judge has dismissed the council's lawsuit against a proposed development on South Huntington Avenue because it's not a branch of city government and so has no standing to sue.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette interviews the chairman of the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council, which claims it has standing to sue over a proposed South Huntington Avenue development because it is a municipal board, but which says it doesn't have to worry about the city dissolving it because it is not "a branch" of municipal government. Got that?

That would, of course, be the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council. The Jamaica Plain Gazette reminds us that the group, which claims to be a municipal board so that it can sue over a South Huntington Avenue development it doesn't like, last year claimed it was not a municipal board so that it could hold private meetings without having to comply with the state Open Meeting Law.

The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council yesterday sued the city over the Zoning Board of Appeals' approval of a luxury housing project at the Home for Little Wanderers site on South Huntington Avenue, the Jamaica Plain Gazette reports.
