Several city councilors say new flight paths out of Logan Airport have shifted early morning flights over neighborhoods not used to being awoken at 5:15 a.m. by low-flying jets - and they want the FAA and Massport to explain what they're going to do about that.

"It's really impacting heavily the quality of life of constituents in my area, who are not as familiar with low flying airplanes as they are now," City Councilor Tim McCarthy (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) said, adding he has also heard complaints from neighboring West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain.

The City Council today approved a hearing on aggressive collection tactics by a company working for the city to collect on back auto-excise taxes that Councilor Tim McCarthy (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) says many people may not even realize they owe.

McCarthy, who called for the hearing, said today he has a constituent unable to renew his driver's license because of a 1988 bill for $100 that, with interest, now totals $1,784.29. The company demanded all the money at once, he said.

City Councilor Tim McCarthy (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) called for the hearing. In a statement, he says:

City councilors from across the city said today their constituents are complaining about the seemingly unstoppable onslaught of plastic-sheathed Globe Direct ads.

"These bags are everywhere," City Councilor Tim McCarthy (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) said at a council meeting today. "Lawns, hedges, porches, steps."

The City Council voted today to urge the School Committee to hold off action on a proposal to eliminate school buses for 4,500 middle-school students until it can undergo more study.

City councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury), who sponsored the unanimously approved motion, said making seventh and eighth graders take the T to school instead of traditional school buses could expose them to far more danger and may not even save the city any money.

Steve Murphy with an umbrella

Steve Murphy was one of the sensible candidates in yesterday's parade.

The Globe gets drenched covering the two mayoral candidates in yesterday's Roslindale parade; doesn't note that both were preceded by Rob Consalvo, staying dry in a trolley bus.
