The Army Corps of Engineers maintains a "witness post" at the dam that diverts some of the Charles River into the Mother Brook in Dedham. It's probably related to the little metal tube next to the post, from which the corps probably can easily draw out some water for tests, but we'd prefer to think it's a place to see things we don't usually see.

About to walk down from Perkins Street to the path around this pond this afternoon when I spotted this guy alighting on some of the scrub between the road and the path.
A flock of blue damselflies were hanging out on the shore of Jamaica Pond, on the Parkman Drive side, near the Arborway.
A turtle sunning itself on a fallen tree branch in Jamaica Pond became a resting spot for a dragonfly this afternoon.
A couple of turtles were lazing on a log at the northern end of Jamaica Pond, soaking up the sun, when a dragonfly landed on one of them. That put a quick end to snooze time - the turtle jumped into the water.
Spotted yesterday in one of the marshy areas between Millennium Park and Brook Farm in West Roxbury.
