In a public notice about its impending merger with the parent company of the East Boston Savings Bank, Rockland Trust says it will close current East Boston branches in Allston, Brighton (two branches), Chinatown, Dorchester, Mission Hill, Roslindale, West Roxbury, Brookline and Cambridge (two branches), among others. Rockland Trust announced today it's closing some of its retail offices, although some will remain open by appointment only. All branch drive-up windows remain open, the bank says.
Paul Whooten, 56, of Hyde Park, who likes to rob people with fake guns, was arraigned in US District Court in Boston yesterday on a count of armed bank robbery in his neighborhood in December, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports. Read more.
Boston Police report that while Paul Whooten, 56, of Hyde Park, made it out of the Rockand Trust branch on Truman Parkway with money in a bag yesterday afternoon, neither he nor his alleged accomplice got far: Whooten was nabbed about a block away, near Cranmore Road, after he ran from the bank, while Richard Berger, 55, who drove away, was collared in Milton after getting caught in some traffic. Centre Street in West Roxbury has long had two digital clocks on either side of Centre Street - and they have almost never told the same time. Currently, people on the south side of the street are taking life easy, what with the slow time indicated on the Rockland Trust clock, while people on the north side of the street clearly are living a faster-paced, no doubt more stressful life, based on the fast time on the Hennigan Insurance clock.
UPDATE: The bank reports online started coming back up for some users shortly after 9 p.m.; all customers should have access by tomorrow morning.
Rockland Trust reports its techs are working as hard as they can to get its Web site and online-banking service back online after it crashed last night. Without getting into the specifics of what went wrong, the bank adds:

The FBI's Bank Robbery Task Force reports this guy gave a note demanding money to a teller at the Rockland Trust branch at 1905 Centre St. yesterday, got some money, then fled on foot.
He's described as having a small build and wore a red Red Sox jacket.
