2024 Olympics

Boston 2024 tweet about vegetables

For the second time this spring, Boston 2024 has used Twitter to link to something they probably shouldn't have. First it was that list of inspiring Olympics movies (the one that included one movie by a Nazi-sympathizing filmmaker and another about the aftermath of the Munich massacre). This morning, they linked to my contribution to Globe editorials about the amazing things the Olympics can do for us, such as getting kids to eat their vegetables.

As earlier, they quickly deleted the tweet, but not before people in general noticed and Jack Gately in particular took the above screenshot.

The latest in a series of editorial calls to action on how the Olympics can reshape every single facet of life in Boston.

It's no secret that kids need to eat their vegetables to grow up strong and healthy and become productive members of society. And yet, so many Boston children refuse to eat their kale and their lima beans. We are, frankly, at risk of producing a generation of neurasthenic adults, barely able to get off their couches, let alone turn Boston into the world-class city it deserves to be. Read more.

The Globe reports Boston 2024 will no longer seek public financing of a temporary Olympic stadium in Widett Circle - and the luxury mega-project that would replace it.

But the group could seek public money for infrastructure improvements - which both the governor and mayor are on board with - something that could prove much pricier than earlier estimates if Boston 2024 makes the proposed games less walkable and more spread out around the state.

Michael Burstein reports Brookline Town Meeting voted 111-46-7 for a resolution opposing the 2024 Olympics.

Wicked Local Brookline reports Town Meeting members were especially concerned about the potential hit on taxpayers from the games.

Yeah, about that:

Initially, a public authority (e.g., City of Boston affiliated Industrial Development Authority) will fund land acquisition and infrastructure costs while the OCOG budget will assume the costs associated with the construction and restoration of the temporary stadium structure, Olympics back-of-house and warm-up areas. A private sector development group will be selected for the proposed development of the project that will provide funds to pay for the debt service on the initial financing utilized for land acquisition and infrastructure costs.

Oh, my, we haven't had a good local media slapfight recently. But Globe Editor Brian McGrory today broke out one of his finer white linen gloves and slowly, dramatically slapped it across the face of CommonWealth Executive Editor Michael Jonas, who had the temerity to criticize Shirley Leung's repeated exhortations to Bostonians to stop acting like a bunch of goddamned cry-baby 2-year-olds, buck up and support those Olympics and be snappy about it.

Jim Romensko posts a copy of McGrory's outraged missive to the publisher and editor of CommonWealth about how Jonas wouldn't recognize an open mind like Leung's - why, she's criticized John Fish, well, that one time, anyway! - if it bit him in the ass, probably because he and CommonWealth are sexist pigs who resent a keen intellect like Leung's, which eagerly challenges the conventional wisdom and is so much keener than Jonas's that Jonas should just move to Texas or something.

Here's hoping Jon Keller posts a copy of the acid-dipped riposte McGrory no doubt sent him as well for his Leung missive.

Everybody's favorite Olympic nag today reassures the USOC not to worry about us lying on the floor crying and screaming and slamming our little fists into the hardwood: We'll be back to our adorable selves after a good nap. Read more.

The city held another one of its neighborhood meetings, and once again some men showed they don't understand the idea of civil discourse.

Boston 2024 plans to release a major overhaul of its proposed plans for the Olympics next month, group CEO Rich Davey told a City Council committee today.

The revised plan would provide new details about possible venues, housing and other infrastructure, and may include locations outside of Boston or even New England, Davey said this morning, at at a hearing called by Council President Bill Linehan's Special Committee for the Olympics.

GamesBids.com reports the local Olympics group has hired British and American consulting firms that have experience working with cities bidding for Olympics games around the world - although not the 2024 ones, natch - in addition to putting Larry Bird and David Ortiz on their board of directors.

Several legislators, including our own reps Aaron Michlewitz (D-North End) and Jay Livingstone (D-Back Bay) have filed legislation that would prohibit the IOC from simply taking over control of billboards and electric signboards owned by the MBTA, MassDOT and Massport in the Boston area should Boston get the 2024 Olympics - unless the IOC pays the going rates for using the spaces.

Mayor Walsh today announced the creation of an Office of Olympic Planning and a full-time executive director: Sara Myerson, formerly chief of staff and director of policy at Preservation of Affordable Housing in Boston:

UPDATE: Looks like WCVB has removed the video. Transcript in the comments.

WCVB has video of John Fish saying that

What bothers me a lot is the decline of pride, of patriotism, the love for our country.

Meanwhile, Mayor Walsh denies a report in the Herald that he's calling for Fish to step down from an active role in Olympic organizing effords:

Now shut up and help poor John Fish get the Olympics and fix the T so we don't become a global laughingstock, Shirley Leung admonishes.

The Times takes note of our little Olympics dustup and sternly warns:

[I]f voters rejected Boston’s bid in a referendum and the city pulled out of contention, it would be a disaster, not only for the bid leaders, but for the entire Olympic movement.

Also, the Times reports the decision to keep details of the Boston bid secret was made by the USOC, not our local organizers.

City Councilor Josh Zakim (Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, Mission Hill) said today he is continuing to work towards putting four ballot questions before Boston voters this fall on whether they want the city to host the 2024 Olympics and whether taxpayers should pay for anything related to the games or use eminent domain to take any property Olympics organizers think they need.

Zakim said recent pronouncements by Boston 2024 that it wants a statewide referendum is "very encouraging."

By adamg - 3/25/15 - 7:53 am

So now Boston 2024 will push a statewide referendum, which might remind some of the effort a couple decades back to repeal rent control in Boston, Cambridge and Brookline via a statewide referendum.

UPDATE: Boston 2024 has deleted the tweet.

This afternoon, Boston 2024 tweeted:

Have you seen all top ten Olympics movies on this list?

Get inspired. On your couch. #LazySunday #Boston2024

The tweet included a link to a list of must-see Olympic movies on a site called ShortList.com. Two of the movies make you wonder if anybody at Boston 2024 actually read the list.

WBUR reports its latest Olympic poll shows only 36% of Boston residents now back the idea of holding the games in Boston - and that more people hold an unfavorable view of Boston 2024 organizers than think they're swell.

Separately, WBUR reports Deval Patrick now says he'll shmooze International Olympics Committee top dogs for free, instead of for $7,500 a day.
