Wild Orchid in West Roxbury

This is not your father's West Roxbury: Wild Orchid, which opened last month on VFW Parkway inbound just past the Dedham line, offers a full complement of the sultry stuff you need, plus smokes. Just do a U-turn past where the other McDonald's used to be, by the car wash.

The Boston Business Journal reports the local boy (and Boston Latin grad) made good sold the property to Home Depot, so we probably can't expect a new mixed-use megaproject on the site.

The BBJ doesn't note how Redstone came to own the property, but it used to be home to the VFW Parkway Drive-In, operated by the forerunner to his National Amusements, which was started by his father, Michael.

Rte. 1 sign on VFW Parkway

The state recently put up this Rte. 1 sign on VFW Parkway northbound where it intersects with West Roxbury Parkway in West Roxbury.

It replaces a sign that for more than 20 years had the "1" painted over, because the state highway department rerouted Rte. 1 from the Storrow Drive/Fenway/Riverway/Jamaicaway/Arborway/Centre Street/VFW Parkway route it used to take to some weird 128/93/95 thing. Is DCR getting us ready for a change back, or was somebody in the sign shop just feeling nostalgic?

An alert UHub reader noticed the guy who said he wanted to build a hotel catering to observant Jews on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury (where the burned-out McDonald's used to be) sold the property yesterday for $1.4 million to the owner of a Brockton gas station and car wash. The BRA's King David Hotel page is now gone, although you can still see the initial filing for the project.

A sleepless citizen in West Roxbury complains about the new Pet Luxe on VFW Parkway:

For the past two days at the pet luxe the dogs a been barking and having serious fights. I live in the condos next door and have bee hearing this since about 730 am yesterday and into today. The staff screams and blows whistles to calm the dogs but just makes more noise. Complaining to the store does no good. I had surgery the beginning of the week and have been unable to get any rest. Something really needs to be done with this situation.
