Feds say they've cracked cocaine ring in Dorchester

Federal officials today announced the indictment of 20 people charged with participation in a cocaine ring that had supplied Dorchester, Mattapan and Jamaica Plain for more than 20 years.

At the center of the ring, the US Attorney's office in Boston says, was Michael Williams, 43, who owned three properties on Greenwood Street and one on Peacevale Road that officials charge were used for storing, preparing and distributing cocaine and crack. Federal agents also searched an apartment at 302 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain and locations in Quincy and Brockton.

Convictions would carry minimum sentences of 10 years to life, lifetime supervision after release and up to a $4 million fine each.

In addition to Williams, those arrested include Donald Williams, 33, and Noel Williams, 54, of Dorchester. Also: Dwayne Person, 40, Dennis Person, Kevin Pena, 24, Anastacio Lopez, 34, Eydris Adams, 34, Nicole Moore, 33, Beverly Perons, 39, Jerome Marion, 33, George Leary, 60, Ramon Lomax, 45, Anthony Madden, 49, Shawn Walker, 35, Debra Brown, 50 and Frank Copelnad, 45, all of Dorchester. Miguel Angel Nouel, 30, of Jamaica Plan was also arrested. They are charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and distribution of more than 500 grams of cocaine and more than 280 grams of cocaine base.

it hasnt affected anything and it wont affect anything. theres still coke and crack all over revere and dorchester. all it means is the police used taxpayers money for the investigation, and taxpayers money will be used to imprison these people

So are we supposed to just let the dealing continue, because it's going to cost taxpayers money. The arrests have to start somewhere.

I think he wants drugs legalized, look what happened to the pot trade, so that we all can pretend that the problem will go away (oh look it's no longer illegal, so there is a drop crime when we can't call crime crime... wowee!) as drug dealers and gangs continue to kill people.

You cannot compare the results of decriminalizing possession of marijuana for personal use (the current law in Mass) with legalization of the drug (the current law for alcohol in the United States).

How many "booze gangs" and "illegal booze dealers" are out there?

Marijuana is still illegal to sell and possess in large quantities, which means that of course there will be drug dealers and gangs.

i wasnt saying these people shouldnt be investigated and arrested, i was just saying that the drug trade won't be affected at all by this bust or any bust. The only effects are usually negative, like people being murdered for snitching or shooting at each other for control of the now unused turf. But more than likely there are people in the same "ring" that will just continue running new stash houses and corners.

There are thousands of kilos of coke and heroin in boston at any time and more comes in daily. New Bedford, Lynn, Revere, Lowell, Lawrence, Worcester, Brockton, Taunton etc. all have plenty to go around as well, and the police will never have enough manpower or money to stop it. Again I'm not saying law enforcement should stop trying, but the approach they're using is futile.

Legalization is by no means an ideal solution, but to put it simplistically it will increase tax revenue exponentially (not just from drug revenue but from a lack of expensive police investigations and overcrowded prisons) and curb the majority of drug and gang violence not just in Boston but in Mexico as well. Almost 100% of murders both here and there are over drug territory, and it's getting worse in both places. A bunch of bored gangbangers with guns and nothing to fight over anymore might actually be a bigger problem though... who knows
