Imagining shoplifters naked at the Pru

Megan Johnson captured a shoplifter grabbed by a couple of Saks security guys at the Prudential Center this evening - along with a female companion who started yelling at her for taking the picture.

LOL That impoverished guy who's being manhandled for absconding with a god-damned hat from an obscenely expensive department store sure looks funny if you imagine him in the throes of homosexual passion! If you have any more pictures of poor people acting out of desperation and looking funny or "gay" (lol gay) please post 'em!

ps. loved the dark-skinned girlfriend part! “WHY YOU GOTTA TAKE A PICTURE?! WHY?!” LOL that's what they sound like isn't it?! LOL

...Seriously, this is a SAD picture. What the hell is wrong with you?

OK, I can get the inclination to laugh at (and possibly photograph...) someone else's misfortune, particularly when it involves having done something stupid and attracted the attention of overzealous cops.

But I feel like your post is over the line a bit. Until you posted, no one here was bringing their racism or homophobia into the discussion. It was just about having a silly laugh over a bit of mall drama.

Maybe it's my web browser? Yours must be displaying the hilarious "Gay_Sex.gif" while mine is showing "Worsening_recession.jpg". I'm using the latest version of FireFox (v3.5.7) and running Windows XP SP3. Maybe I need a Mac?

So, because it's an "Obscenely expensive department store" someone allegedly apparently trying to steal from them is no big deal?

i think he was stealing a hat from an upscale department store, not bread from grocery store to feed his family. and there was no mention of homosexuality that i saw (besides yours). and it was in quotes, she may have said that word for word. I see no reason for anger.

Johnson's blog entry is pretty childish stuff. I guess Adam's headline should have provided ample warning to steer clear if you're looking for heavy news analysis or social commentary. I don't think you're response was particularly over the top. Also, it's such a shame that dudes who steal millions and billions seldom have the chance to get manhandled like that by rent-a-cops while being photographed by titillated kids.

Oh excuse me, I didn't know that when some skater kid steals an expensive hat from Saks, I'm supposed to declare him to be a modern day Jean Valjean stealing bread to feed his family!

Nobody's arguing that the security guards acted wrongly, or that shoplifting is no "big deal" as some guy said up there somewhere. The security guards did their jobs, caught the guy, good for them.

No, you're the problem.

I'm arguing that you're a little thoughtless at best, and at worst a serious asshole.

So, when you're in the Pru and it's a recession and the real unemployment rate is at 17.2% and you see somebody being apprehended for shoplifting from Saks, I guess I can understand that your first instinct was to take a picture. After all, it's an interesting situation. It's got drama and action. I guess I'd have the tact to not do it right in front of the embarrassed and ashamed girlfriend, but I don't think that makes me better than you or anything like that. It's what comes next that makes you horrible.

You post it on the interwebzone and attempt to make it a funny photo. Ok, it's not that funny really, but I mean I guess poor people are pretty entertaining; remember "Married... With Children"? Hahaha, oh Al, will you ever win? And the joke you attempted... they look like they're having a gay threesome if they were naked? What? Are you 12 years old or am I missing something?

Is it because he's a "skater kid", as you say, that makes this photo funny? Is there an internet skater kid meme to which I am not privy? Would it still be funny if he were black, or an immigrant? Why is it funny?!

I also like the inclusion of the girlfriend's quote. "WHY YOU GOTTA TAKE A PICTURE?". Thanks for pointing out that this woman has poor grammar and may be - shall we say - of the lower castes. Next time you should embellish it a little though to make it EVEN FUNNIER! I suggest, "OH LAWD WOMAN WHY YOU BE TAKIN MAH PHOTOS? I DONE NOT DONE NOTHIN WRONG ABOUT BIRTHIN' NO BABIES"

My favorite quote from your blog?

"But really, I just ran upstairs to the shoe department and laughed to myself." ~ Megan Johnson, 9 JAN 2010, after witnessing someone else's misfortune. This is the richest, whitest quote I have ever heard.

And you went home and blogged about it on something called "Down and Out on Beacon Hill". Down and out? Have you ever been "down and out" of anything? Perhaps you once went "down" to Starbucks and they were "out" of soy milk?

In closing, your blog is nicely designed and you seem like a well-educated person, and judging by your quotes and references you have a diverse set of influences and are well read. Why you find this photo funny and why you think gay jokes make it funnier is beyond me, but then again sometimes I feel things.

Ahhh... a superior human being. Complaining about someone acting like a superior human being. The head spins.

Starbucks has never been out of soy milk when I've asked!

That was an actual funny response with no jokes about gay sex, and there was no negro dialect. You are not the real Megan Johnson, but an impostor. The real Megan Johnson is waiting by the windows in copley plaza, hoping to snap a shot of two homeless guys huddling for warmth and posting it on her blog with a hilarious caption; something like "Lookee here, we done got ourselves some homos"

You did assume the people here were poor though.
Just sayin

I apologize for calling anyone with this teabagging "f-you, got mine" conservative ideology a "human being"; my bad.

I changed my mind; the picture is actually hilarious. Hey! I know another place where people say "hey wouldn't it be funny if these two were naked and looked like they were having gay sex?"
it's called Abu Ghraib; check it out, the pictures are SOLID COMEDY GOLD

Hi 3.12159,

You sure do make a lot of assumptions about the people in the photo and the photographer based on very little evidence. It looks like the female has her own cell phone out. Perhaps documenting their side of the story? If that is indeed the case (my assumption) it makes it harder to criticize someone else taking photos. The line in quotes seems plausible and not racist. Both of the possible shoplifters appear tastefully dressed, though I can't see much of the male. From looking at the clothing and manicure on the female, I would not have assumed she was poor. I would have guessed that it they were stealing a hat, it would have been for skater dude to wear. Citing statistics about unemployment in this case seems like a reach.

No, but your also not suppose to take joy in it. Or use it to hold total strangers up to ridicule.

So the OP is considering that the person the security officers caught was guilty of shoplifting without seeing them do anything illegal. And is pleased and proud of her ability to laugh at the misfortune of others.

Thanks for finding this blog post.
