First ALB, then an editorial in the Globe (A Shade Cooler) that got the wing nuts and the tree nuts going at each other, now this! Who knew trees could get so controversial?
After 30 years, you really don't need a specific reason to take down a Bradford pear. The tree is well at the end of its lifespan. It's all because of the tight crotch angle. The big branches are weakly connected, and will come down in a storm, taking a big chunk of the trunk with them. The trees will unavoidably die then. If you're taking one of them down, you might as well take the set, because you will save on sending out the trucks four times - not to mention property damage, as these big limbs can crush cars. These NIMBYS should do some cursory research before opening their barbaric yawps. If they're determined to plant a Callery pear (as the family of invasive, Chinese-native pears are called), they should plant an Aristocrat, which has a looser crotch angle and thus a longer lifespan.
I think my uncle is on his 3rd tree. Over 50 years, 2 have gone to the chipyard in the sky. They look nice for about 20 years max, then literally collapse under their own weight.

Then again, this is Cambridge...

Bradford pears do not count
Bradford pears do not count as trees. Real trees are worth fighting for, but not bradford pears.
