A Dorchester tradition? Chilling gummi worms in the snow

Whalehead King learns the hard way on Tuttle Street in Dorchester that gummi worms taste better when chilled for awhile in a snow pile:
... "Put it down!" the voice repeated and I noticed it came from a window facing me that was cracked open. The curtains were drawn. "I was just looking," I told the window, "Why are these worms in the snow?" The voice said, "I'm chilling them. They're better that way."
I asked, "Don't you have a refrigerator?" and as I did the front door opened. A woman glared at me while holding a broom with the business end held high, in swat position. "Put the candy down and back away, Mister," she said. ...

Is that the Dot version of Maple Candy?
Chilling treats in the snow is a venerable tradition in these parts, but when I grew up, we did it with maple syrup. Bring it slowly to a near boil - hotter for harder, toffee-like confections, and cooler for chewier taffy-like candy - and then pour it over the snow. Let it cool, and you've got yourself a uniquely wintertime treat. Better keep a large broom handy to ward-off curious or hungry bloggers, though.
