Vacant South End building partially collapses; forces evacuation of neighboring condos

The Boston Fire Department tweets the rear wall at 56 Berkeley St., from the third to fifth floors, collapsed around 11:30 p.m., Wednesday. The building is vacant and nobody was injured, but as a precaution, a nine-unit condo building at 50 Berkeley St. was ordered evacuated for the night.

The building in question was a pizza joint until a couple years ago. It is attached to the old union headquarters next door (which had a movie theater / live theater on the top floor, btw).

The Ellis Memorial & Eldridge House at 66 Berkeley Street recently purchased the building at 58 Berkeley Street; I don't know if the purchase included the pizza joint at 56 Berkeley Street.

The evacuated condo building is located at the corners of Berkeley and Appleton streets. There is a driveway between it and the pizza joint. As of this morning, there was yellow tape along both buildings. The collapsed facade was not visible from the street, so I didn't take any photos.

Ellis bought it? There are city hearings for Chandler to open hotel & offices in those buildings.
