Sox wanted taxpayers to help pay for widening of Fenway bullpen

Yes, they asked for state historic-preservation tax credits for the work. The state said no. But don't worry. The Herald reports the Sox are still eligible for several million in tax credits for restoring the historic ballpark.

I actually don't have a problem with historic tax credits. Especially when the alternative model is to offer tax credits and public backed bonds to build a giant new stadium way out in the boonies, surrounded by parking lots. Expanding a historic structure, especially in a sensitive way is tougher (read more expensive) than calling in the bulldozers and starting from scratch, but it's also more environmentally responsible, and helps keep the center of the city vibrant.

If they were attempting to put the bullpens back to their original locations/size, then maybe this would be an appropriate money grab. Instead, they're trying to shorten right field and give the bullpen pitchers some extra room (and probably add another row or two of seats somehow into the whole thing). They're just remodeling not renovating.

That money is for people who are looking at an antique building and hoping to restore it to its previous historical appearance. It's not for Fenway and the Sox to add seats to the top of the Green Monster or monkey around with the bullpen size.

The Sox owners cut hours and pay for their employees and then buy a debt ridden soccer team.

They also evidently tossed out the independently-run Kettle Corn guys behind the right-field grandstand and bought their own Kettle Corn equipment to do it themselves now.

What does any of this have to do with the legal right the ownership has to avail themselves of available tax relief?

Suffolk Downs sits there rotting instead of being used for the new stadium. Am I wrong here?

That would have been a great location for the soccer stadium Kraft wants to build.

Hey, maybe they can pass on whatever savings they get to those of us who buy tickets? Especially with interest in the team apparently starting to wane...
