Thief stoops pretty low in the Back Bay

Boston Police report somebody went along the Commonwealth Avenue Mall stealing bronze plaques set in the sidewalk at the foot of several benches near Clarendon Street.

The plaques, which honor people who made donations for the benches, were discovered missing this morning. Detectives from District D-4 are investigating. Have info? Call them at 617-343-4256 or contact the anonymous tip line by calling 800-494-TIPS or texting TIP to CRIME (27463).

It used to be that when commodity prices were high you had to count the spoons, your copper downspouts, and your bronze memorial plaques.

In this Great Recession, the metal scrappers scrounge what they can regardless of the prices.

We discovered this walking the dog this morning and I felt sick. What kind of lowlife could steal a memorial to a person or a pet.

Please keep a lookout and call if you see any suspicious activities in your parks.

Thank goodness this liberal Democrat does not run the city. Otherwise he would want the thieves (if there are caught), chained to the benches, with signs stating what they did. And a box of rotten tomatoes across the walkway for anyone who cares for some target practice.

The crucial part of the BPD news release isn't this crime but that it was only found out about b/c ... a Boston police officer was on a paid detail.

Thank god for him/her!

This has happened recently to the benches at Waverly Station (Fitchburg commuter rail line) in Belmont, too.
