Bomb squad blows something up in Cambridge

Outside the Novartis building at 100 Technology Square, shortly before 10:30 a.m., Amy Pritchard tweets. Mike Munsell took this photo of the robot shortly before 10:26, when he tweeted:
BOOOOOOMMMMM
UPDATE: Wicked Local Cambridge reports the box contained laboratory materials sent to the wrong address.

robot-assisted dirty bombing
I don't understand this logic. Something unknown? Blow it up. What if the unknown substance is more harmful after being dispersed? It seems like any number of laboratory chemicals (and terror agents as well?) could cause harm when treated in this manner, more than the as of yet unfounded risk of Kendall Sq IEDs.
my favorite thing about "harmless shit blown up" is...
...that they almost always refuse to say what the stuff in the "suspicious package" was, probably because they'd look really stupid for all the completely harmless crap they blow up.
Someone should start collecting statistics on how many false suspicious packages there are versus legitimate bombs. Wouldn't surprise me if it was at least 99.9%, which means (like the people who freaked out about the umbrella) that everyone needs to caaaaaalm the fuuuuuck dooooown.
