Cafe, spare that tree!

South End Patch reports the city holds a hearing on Oct. 18 on a request from Parish Cafe to chop down a couple of trees on Tremont Street so it can put in some outdoor tables and chairs.

Dumb idea. They'll lose my business if they chop down city trees. We already lost enough trees during the recent storms. Besides, half the new trees planted end up being mysteriously broken at the trunk by vandals.

maybe they could buy 2 or 3 parking spaces from the city, expand the sidewalk and put the cafe UNDER the trees.

Parish Cafe first asked to remove the trees last September, but received a resounding no from the Parks Department and residents. This time around, they have some neighborhood support and the Parks Department says they have open minds to hearing the request again: http://www.mysouthend.com/index.php?ch=news&sc=&sc...

They made the outdoor seating permanent at the Boylston location. Looking at the picture, they basically want to remove the trees so that can be the sidewalk? Doesn't appear to be a lot of space for seating there but they managed to squeeze some in front of the Rattlesnake.

Now if they can just learn to clear out the snow from the much reduced sidewalk...

Why wouldn't they put the cafe Between the trees instead? I'd much rather have a treelined street and eat in the shade of a tree than just sit along next to the parked cars?

I don't know the location and I like tree lined streets as much as the next person, but birds can make sitting under a tree particularly unpleasant. Witness the trees that were cut down in front of Faneuil Hall a few years back.

Just saying.

You're joking, right? You don't like birds in trees? Go to an indoor mall then!

the owners are only concerned with making a buck, so they really don't care about the character of the neighborhood or about things which would make it a nicer place to live.

A steril, barren stretch of sidewalk should really draw in the crowds for the 4 months a year its nice enough to eat outside. Maybe they could dismantle a playground while they're at it.

I am not a fan of cutting down the trees. I think that Parish could probably squeeze a couple two tops between what is on that corner with no problem, but businesses are in the business to make a buck.

As to the "character of the neighborhood"--there is only character there now because Parish moved in. The place was an empty Rent-A-Center for 10 years before Parish moved in. The building across Tremont was literally falling apart (sidewalk was closed because of falling bricks). It is only since Parish moved in that the there has been any impetus to renovate the space (the out-of-town owner of the property could careless before).

The only character on that corner previously was the occasional gun play across the street in front of the Check Cashers and the chance to get mugged.

Cut down the trees, pull up the brick sidewalks, and throw in a Wal-Mart: then will you be satisfied?
