Northeastern student takes a pole

First-person account of a pole-dancing class at a Boylston Street studio:

Reardon got herself dolled-up, complete with hair extensions and a little military jacket to go along with the theme of the dance she was going to demonstrate for me to the song "War" by Edwin Starr. She led me into the shadowy dance studio, which looked like any other dance studio in the world, except with eight or nine poles stuck into the floor. Reardon had me sit cross-legged against the wall in the studio to watch her demonstration. I felt like I was in a movie about a young stripper, learning from the master.

"Now be warned," she said as she leaned against a pole directly in front of me. "I'm going to look at you in a way that girls don't normally look at you. Don't worry - I like boys."

I'm embarrassed that this is in our school newspaper. Good for you for trying something new, but this isn't newsworthy. I love how we can write an article about a pole-dancing class, but the Huntington News refuses to publish a list of the 100 Most Influential Seniors on its website. Which do you think the community would rather read about?

...because I'd rather read about pole dancing than the "100 Most Influential Seniors." Refusing to publish the list? Sounds like a cover-up! Get digging Nancy Drew!!

The paper could hardly print just the names of 100 students and claim they are "the most" influential. They'd need at least short profiles on them, and even a few lines on 100 students would be a LOT of work.

Also, whose list is it? What were the parameters? Were people nominated, and by whom? Will there be a list of juniors next? What about sophomores and freshmen? They might like ot be profiled, too. I'm not a journalist, but I can see a lot of questions that would have to be asked before a paper would even be able to consider it.

To be honest, lists like that are fairly boring anyway. I'd much rather read an in-depth piece about a student having an experience I've never had (but might be inspired ot pursue, based on the piece) than a couple of lines on 100 people I probably don't know and don't really care about.

It's something Northeastern puts together, not the newspaper. Can't remember exactly what office is in charge of it or how they determine who's the most influential.

The list of influential seniors is compiled by the faculty, administration, staff, and students at Northeastern. The paper published the list of students (without photos or profiles) in the physical copy of the paper distributed around campus. However, it seems that most people only read the online version (including commuter students and those on co-op), and the paper flat-out refused to publish the list online after they were asked to do so.

I'm sorry you'd rather read about a student taking pole-dancing classes, but I'd rather read about how my classmates are contributing to their communities.

It's online...there's plenty of room to publish both.

It's a false dilemma to say they chose one over the other. You might have a reason to not want them to publish the pole-dancing class story. You might have a reason to be angry that they didn't publish the influential student story. But they didn't pick one at the expense of the other one. It's not like the physical paper where there's only so much space to put stuff. So, it's not like what people would *rather* read really matters.

Also, as far as pole-dancing classes go, it's the "new thing" in exercise. That's why they considered it newsworthy. If anything, they're actually a tad late to the game.

The issue is that the 100 Most Influnetial Seniors is not a "list" that is published by the newspaper, it's a ad space purchased by the Department of Student Affairs.

If we were to take a vote, I'm guessing that the average UniversalHub reader would select "pole dancing college student" before "list of influential students at Northeastern". Not that they shouldn't publish the list, but those tend to be more interesting to the people on the list and their friends/family than to the public at large.

I feel like the paper's had a lot more fluffy pieces in it since it officially split from NU, but I could be wrong.

You shouldn't be so embarrassed that this is in your school newspaper considering the Huntington News is no longer affiliated with the University and is it's own independent entity. You should get your facts straight before bashing a Special Sections article that was written during a sex and health issue.

I'm also a NU student and think this article is more interesting than a list of names. I'll determine who is influential to me, NU doesn't need to tell me.

Pole dancing to Edwin Starr's War? Ewwww...

Someone's missing the point - trust me on this one.

This is different than the pole dancing business that an Emerson student is starting? (see the Globe article: http://www.boston.com/business/articles/2011/04/16...)

Seems that stripping your way through college is taking a whole new twist.

Gypsy Rose has been on Boylston Street since at least last year (and maybe longer); I'm always amused (because I'm easily amused) when I walk by her sign. I didn't know about the giant brass balls she uses as a doorknocker until I read today's article, though.

The song is "War" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
