Sebastian Z. ventured out to Castle Island on a recent cold afternoon for this shot of the Sugar Bowl gazebo.

I've gone to Castle Island for decades but never knew part of it was called the 'Sugar Bowl' until now.

I've been trying to track down where the name comes from since running the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5 miler this summer ( http://www.jimkanesugarbowlfivemiler.com/ ).

I would love some insight...

It's probably just the generic name given to any vaguely circular depression by locals. There's a sugar bowl along the Jamaicaway near Jamaica Pond that was used for sledding. Just a big oval depression in the ground. The official name is Pleasure bay. It was probably named the sugar bowl when the causeway was extended to enclose the bay entirely.

So many newbies think the causeway around the bay is the Sugar Bowl.
Some other newbies want to call the new structure there the Sugar Shack.
