When you've already got lots of outstanding warrants, what's a little fare jumping?

Alleged evasion starts around 0:35.

MBTA Transit Police report a man spotted piggybacking another passenger through the fare gates at Central Square yesterday turned out to be wanted in Boston, Lynn, Malden and Cambridge on a variety of warrants.

Christopher Coates, 27, of Cambridge was initially stopped by a pair of plainclothes T cops around noon after, police say, they watched him evade his fare. They took him in after discovering he was wanted for everything from assault and battery and drug possession to operating without a license and being in possession of a stolen car.

Innocent, etc.

I'd like to see the transit cops doing the same on the northbound side of the Chinatown stop, which never seems to have an inspector stationed - can't tell you how many lowlifes have pulled a conga line behind me.

Today I was waiting for my girlfriend at the Church St entrance to Harvard, and there was nobody on duty in the booth (which is rather unusual based on past experiences, but not at that time of day). There were at least 10 evaders in 20 minutes, and they weren't even trying to hide it. The gates stay open VERY long here, I'm not sure why, but it needs to be fixed. At Malden, they practically close before you're past the gates. One guy spun around when someone followed him in and made him go back out after telling him to pay his own fare. They of course waited and followed someone else. One of the piggybackers went by me after going through and I snarked about why he didn't pay for himself. There were these two very bold (and old) ladies who asked someone for directions then piggybacked each other like it was expected of them. Then there were these two ladies who piggybacked and the 2nd one almost left the charlieticket ontop of the machine and her friend called her a dumbass. Then there was this one teenager who tried to to reach over and set the gates open but he triggered the buzzer, so he walked around and eventually piggybacked. It was pretty disgusting really. I want the next fare hike to come with $250 fines and more evasion stings.
