Citizen complaint of the day: Damn, that's a big hole

UPDATE: City says hole is not at either 222 Cambridge St.; offers reward for hole's actual location.

Big holeSome hole.

A concerned citizen takes time to note that when a pothole approaches wading-pool size, it's getting a little bit too big.

Ed. note: The complaint says 222 Cambridge St., Boston. But the Google Street View of 222 Cambridge by Mass. General doesn't look anything like that. 222 Cambridge in Allston, at Sorrento St., however, does, kinda. We're not even going to hazard a guess as to why Stevie Nicks is on pothole patrol in Boston.

I had a pothole right outside my apartment try to eat me a couple of years ago. Called Mark Ciommo's office, and within a few days some guys came by and patched it up. I know, I know, that involved some remarkably out-of-date tech (The phone? Who uses a phone any more?!?), but it worked!

The whole point of Citizen Connect/Mayor's Hotline is exactly to keep people from contacting their councilors to get things done. It's all part of Dear Leader's efforts to take control of every single function in this city and make sure his name is attached to every single thing people see and do.

That's an incredibly cynical and paranoid concept of our good Mayor's intentions...

I love it!

This should be the Mayor's job, frankly, although not him personally. The job of legislators is to legislate, not to call in favors for their constituents. Municipal government (especially in strong-mayor municipalities like Boston) has a weak split between the legislative and executive branches, but even so, it still distracts from their real job for them to be dealing with piddling little issues like individual potholes instead of trying to shape the overall policy of the city. It's the executive branch's job to actually fill the potholes, and they shouldn't have to be nagged to do it by Councillors.

Isn't the point to get the pothole filled? Figures people like you would find fault in that.

I bike through there several times a week - I would have noticed this, guaranteed!

Adam, I think Stevie is pointing to the Dreams of crystal visions in the pothole...

I have a feeling this photo wasn't even taken in the USA. That fence and especially those pavement markings make me think this was taken in Europe, probably the UK. Here's a similar looking area in Birmingham (minus the sidewalk). Plus, who has worn a coat and scarf like that in the last couple weeks?

I thought the same thing! Who the heck is wearing a coat and scarve in 90F weather???

liftoff site, think of the butterfly effect from the macadam that went with it!

On a serious note, I remember being "somewhat" convinced (by a city councilor)that it is better to contact your city councilor with these problems because they might spot some overall trend if they have the big neighborhood picture, whereas, the city repair people might not deal with the root cause, or may not have an interest in dealing with a root cause.

Obvious! If you drive through that hole, you'll need new silver springs...and shocks.

My question is when was this picture taken? Seems to be a little over dressed for 90 degree days with 70% humidity.

landslide brought it down?

That pothole must be in Albania, there are no curbs like that this side of Latvia.

... since the Allston sidewalk at Sorrento Street is slabbed (and that's not 222, I think that would be the CSX entrance on the other side of the 4-lane, towards Harvard Street).

Cambridge Street in Boston (Beacon Hill/West End) is slabs and brick, as it is in Cambridge by the Middlesex County government buildings.

And Boston in Lincolnshire doesn't have a Cambridge Street.

Good luck finding this one; insufficient clues in the photo to figure out the actual location.

Salford Liberal Democrats, “Val Kelly with a huge Eccles pothole”

On a separate line of thought, I was wondering if the Citizens Connect site included valid EXIF data with the photos, as that could at least narrow down things like when & maybe where the photo was taken.

In this case, the city's version of the photo doesn't appear to have any EXIF data at all — so no help there — whereas the original verson on Flickr says, among other things, that it was taken May 2, 2010 at 3.21pm PDT. So that right there would have been a tipoff that something fishy was going on — why would a legit report make use of a 2+ year old photo?

If the city isn't keeping track of that data already, they should add it. A post like this shouldn't have gotten past such a hypothetical idiot filter :-)
