Northern lights tonight?

The Globe reports they might be visible even this far south.

Globe science! There's a almost zero chance to see them tonight.

The sun finally had some activity after a long spat of doing nothing, but it's very minor activity.

Maybe very northern ME... maybe...

Fairly decent sized CME due in the next few hours (peak predicted just before Sat midnight edt). Chances of seeing aurora in northern NE or NY would be pretty good, actually - if the area wasn't overcast. Chances in southern NE would definitely be less, but not zero - again, if we were going to have any clear skies - which doesn't look at all likely.

UPDATE: 4pm Sunday. Widespread reports/pictures of aurora last night from most of the northern 48 contiguous states and Alaska. Just talked to friends in southern NH (less than 40 crow-fly miles north of Boston). They had some clearing very late last night and got great views of red and green aurora. Very likely that these would have been visible down here as well. Ah well.

Still chance for more this evening. Going to give it a try, but I'll have to head out of the city to get a decently dark northern sky (closest/easiest from here is the stretch of the Boston Post road between Weston and Wayland.)
