Firefighters quickly put out a small fire at a construction site next to the hospital's Menino Pavillion, but spreading smoke forced the evacuation of the neo-natal unit on the third floor.

Other workers and patients were told to remain in place - including surgeons, nurses and patients in seven operating rooms that were not affected by the smoke.

My BU med student friend says it is a pipe that conducts steam and other utilities, but is apparently going to be converted to a patient transport tube.
