Brighton synagogue, ritual bath center propose replacement buildings - and residential units

Two longstanding Jewish facilities on Washington Street are working with a developer to raze and replace their existing buildings and add a 73-unit residential building.

In a letter of intent filed with the BRA yesterday, Congregation Kadimah-Toras Moshe and the Daughters of Israel Mikvah, 101-105 Washington St., say their facilities - both originally houses - desperately need replacements.

They say they'd build a new synagogue where the mikvah - a place for women to take monthly ritual baths - sits now, build a new mikvah on what is currently empty land and erect the residential building where the synagogue currently sits. The synagogue has been at that location since the 1940s.

The residential building would have 64 parking spaces in an underground garage.

Because the project involves more than 50,000 square feet of construction, it will go through a detailed BRA review and community oversight. The groups unveiled the idea at a Brighton Allston Improvement Association meeting earlier this month.
