Probation officer in Dorchester court charged with raping woman under his supervision

UPDATE: Averill died in a car crash yesterday afternoon.

William Averill, 50, of West Roxbury, faces arraignment tomorrow on charges he raped a woman who'd reported to him as part of her probation for larceny, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office and Boston Police report.

Averill will be arraigned in Suffolk Superior Court on three counts each of rape and indecent assault and battery and one count of assault with intent to rape, authorites say, adding he had been on administrative leave from his job as a probation officer in Dorchester Municipal Court since an investigation began earlier this year.

Officials say:

Averill was assigned to supervise the victim, a woman in her 20s, while she was serving a one-year probation sentence on convictions for larceny and receiving stolen property. On Jan. 5, the victim reported to probation as required. Averill allegedly led her into his office, where he began to touch and kiss her. She told him to stop and he did. However, later in the meeting, Averill allegedly closed the blinds in his office and sexually assaulted the victim.

After leaving the courthouse, the victim called a relative and disclosed the assault, leading to an investigation by the Sexual Assault Units of the Suffolk DA’s office and Boston Police Department.

Criminalists in the Boston Police Crime Lab were able to develop a DNA profile from evidence collected during that investigation. Further testing by Massachusetts State Police criminalists showed that the profile matched a DNA sample provided by Averill – and excluded 99.92 percent of the male population as possible contributors.

Can victim sue Commonwealth ?

He was a state employee and put in contact with the victim as part of his official duties. Someone could (and should) sue Comcast if one of their installers did something similar when at someone's house for a service call.

Spelling is off but, Ish Kabibble is a Yiddish phrase which means "I should worry." When applied to a person, it is typically indicates a mischievous behavior. Given his crimes...makes sense.

The phrase is completely sarcastic, not a true plea for help, sort of like Mad's "What, Me Worry?"

Thid is no time to be making jokes about this particular incident. To all of you morbid insensitive disgusting and inhuman joke makers you should ask the question what if that was your sister, wife, daughter, niece or some other female relative, rape is not funny there is absolutely no justifiable reasons to be joking about rape.

And as far as William, this situation is equally a tragedy sad and hurtful. Every suspect deserved their fair day in court day in court. unfortunately this will not happen at this time.

I pray for the victim's/ survivors positive recovery physically spiritually mentally and socially.

I equally pray for Williams soul and for his family and friends.

This is a tragedy all around.

I've known Billy for many years and it really hurts my heart to even think he was capable of such a thing! My Prayers go out to his family. I'm sure there's more to this story than whats being reported! The guy I knew would NEVER do this....but who knows?

Me and Billy weren't on speaking terms when I left DDC. But I don't think he was capable of this kind of behavior, he loved his family. And he was very productive in attaining services for his son. However I do believe he placed himself a comprising position. One that lead his probationer to file these charges. Prayers for the Averill family, and the victim if I'm wrong. But I've seen other P.O.'s place themselves in jeopardy.

I believe en-light of these allegation, The Court System need to re-think how to better protect their employees. Please do not get me mis-understood about Bill's guilt or innocence. We may never know this now.

However The Courts still need to re-evaluate "Universal Precautions" for all their employees. I'm a social services agent, I use "Universal Precautions" all the time, for examples, side hugs only in the presence of others, While in a room with a sensitive population person, I never close the door or I'm in the room with others. If at a school or some other youth populated facility, I ask is there a staff or adult bathroom or I would wait until all the children have vacated the bathroom. If I'm with a co-worker, which whom I'm cool with I asked them to come with me or keep the little ones, sensitively and professionally from coming into the bathroom in which I'm occupying. this sounds extreme, however I will not forget how those little lying brats accused the custodian or school staff of a sex crime and it turn out not to be true. He was only the bathroom.

It very sad today someone can only be accuse of such a deed and the public convicts us, destroy our family, ridicule and hang us us before we can even get a fair trail. Where is the fairness.
