Forest Hills gets its other track back

Deb Beatty Mel reports Orange Line trains are entering and leaving from both sides of the platform again, several months after one side was shut to allow for the work needed to build a new station entrance on the other side of New Washington Street.

Meanwhile the upper busway
Meanwhile the upper busway which was the only thing they really promised would be finished for fall is taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Hopefully at least with the exhaust fans they can start a little more of the demo around the 39 driveway while waiting.
The new Shea Square stuff doesn't look half bad now that it's mostly all done
I'm still waiting on the Washington Street sidewalk
Either to finish them or at least to start work on them. Ukraine Way to the Arboretum entrance has been closed going on 18 months now.
Pretty sure they aren't going
Pretty sure they aren't going to touch that until Washington gets shifted over into it's new configuration. The plans are for wider better sidewalks so no point in repairing those little two footers that they had.
Yet I'm left with my question
Why were they ripped up to begin with? And if they were going to wait, why did they only pave from South Street to the Arboretum entrance?
People use that sidewalk.
Upper Busway
The upper busway, if you include the canopy over it, is still a ways away. I was at the Nov. 2 public meeting where they presented the 60%-completed design of the canopy. Notice I said "design", not construction.
Not sure when they are going to be moving the bus lanes back to their new positions - whether they will do that first or wait until they are ready to do the bus lanes and canopy all at once.
There were many objections to the canopy design but I doubt there will be any design changes based on the comments. They did show a bus stop layout for the inner and outer busways and I raised a loud objection to their plan to once again split the 40/50 stop from the 34/34E stop (actually, if I remember right the 34 and 34E had separate stops in the new plan although they were adjacent). The old layout (before construction started) was bad enough but this newly constructed layout will likely not have a break in the fence that you can squeeze through.
Yeah, it should be a no
Yeah, it should be a no-brainer to put similar routes near each other. What routes are going to be next to the 34 and 34E? The 40 is the most similar, since it stays on Washington the longest.
Unfortunately
I didn't take a photo of the diagram and suffer from CRS. I only remember the item that most affected me.
I know the canopy is a ways
I know the canopy is a ways away but I think they'll get some modicum of "operational" going there a while beforehand. Once the deck is actually completed it's mostly just concrete work and yanking out all that crap asphault they've poured.
Good. When I was waiting 30
Good. When I was waiting 30 minutes for a train at Green Street station yesterday due to a disable train at Mass Ave, the outbound train was sitting at Green with passengers because they couldn't fit another train into Forest Hills because of this construction. It was a ridiculous mess.
Cool!
Cool!
We've reopened an existing platform. After installing a new entrance. Only taking a few months.
In other news, New York is opening a new subway line in a couple of days.
That's actually not snark against Forest Hills. The new NY line was proposed something like 97 years ago, they tore down the alternatives 60 years ago (increasing the need for it), they built a little of it piecemeal about 45 years ago and stopped, really only got back into purposeful construction in the last 10-20 years, and it's only 3 or four new stations - about 1/4 - 1/5 of the hoped-for full line.
And the T just sent out an alert
to that effect:
And only a month behind schedule
This was originally supposed to be finished by December 1st. "Standing by for two minutes due to traffic ahead" at every stop on the way home in the evenings was getting real (c)old.
I dunno
I was all ready to gripe about them being behind schedule (since every other aspect of the project has gone that way) but they never put a date in when they first announced, just "until December."
I've heard they are only
I've heard they are only pausing for the winter, and will resume one-track operation in the spring because not all of the vent work was completed on time.
Oh, for the love of...
Yes, I've hated this project for years before it began, but why to they keep on proving me right?
