South Bay jail guard charged with sexual contact with an inmate

Updated with arraignment info.

A corrections officer at the South Bay House of Corrections had bail set at $20,000 today at his arraignment on a charge of having sexual contact with a female inmate, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Marlon Juba, 29, faces up to five years in prison if convicted under a state law that specifically bars all sexual conduct between inmates and officers, the DA's office says.

Prosecutors say investigators for the Suffolk County Sheriff initially started investigating Jub on allegations he was bringing drugs and other contraband into the jail.

In the course of that investigation, they learned of information suggesting he had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. Sheriff’s investigators conducted interviews, reviewed surveillance camera footage, and gathered other forms of evidence suggesting that he had an improper sexual relationship with a specific female inmate, leading to his suspension from duty.

The evidence gathered by the Suffolk Sheriff’s investigators was corroborated by evidence gathered by Boston Police Sexual Assault detectives, including a sexually explicit letter to Juba from the inmate recovered during a search warrant at his home.

Boston Police arrested Juba yesterday.

Innocent, etc.
