Potential Sam Adams brewery site goes to pot

The Boston Business Journal reports Boston Beer Co. has sold a 53-acre plot in Freetown it originally bought so it could build a new brewery to a Colorado company that plans to use it for the country's largest medical-marijuana facility.

they never were going to build a brewery there. Cheaper to keep contract brewing in OH and PA and acting like you're a Boston brewery.....
My $$ will continue to go to Harpoon, DOT Brewery, Night Shift....

But Sam Adams has its headquarters here, it has the JP Brewery, and it has historically been very generous and supportive with other breweries (it has shared its hops during a couple times of hops shortage).

So yeah, buy what you want, but I'd say they qualify as a good Boston company that deserves support.

GE is about to have their headquarters here too, but their lightbulbs will still be made in Hungary. It will net Boston a few Hundred jobs, at the cost of millions in tax breaks. So I should buy GE stuff now I guess.
Sam Adams provides Union jobs to workers in OH and PA, workers who likely voted for Trump, a man who will do his damndest to bust that union apart. I say starve the bastards. The JP brewery brews small batch and experimental stuff (read: GARBAGE). You can't even get their beer at the brewery on a tour, they tow you to Foleys, where the full SA line is available, trucked in from Burke distro, and to them from the rust belt.
My buddy recently delivered some $30k+ art to Koch's Newton home (he has others), and spent significant time nudging the frame this way and that until his wife (loaded on her own: she is some kind of medical science super heroine) was satisfied.
If Sam Adams folded tomorrow Jim Koch will be fine. His MA workers will find jobs at GOOD breweries, or start their own, or get a different job in MA (cuz there are jobs here). His rust belt workers can eat crow.
Harpoon is owned by its employees, and they can pour you a beer at their own brewery in Boston proper. And 95% of their stuff ISN'T abjectly terrible. The choice to me is obvious.

I also don't drink Narragansett, the famous RI beer brewed in upstate NY. They employ a few handfuls of white collar workers in RI. Meanwhile the Budweiser you buy here is brewed in NH, go figure.
I choose to support local JOBS not local RICH PEOPLE.

Do they pass by Foley's on the way to Doyle's?

Employs more people than the brewery in NH.

I'm with you on Harpoon, Night Shift, etc.

I doubt those union workers voted for Trump - but you can bet that the idiots employed by Yuengling were required to photograph their ballots or be fired!

A few things came together to engender, then kill the deal.

1. Water and Sewer lines were extended up from Fall River to this site.

2. The Town of Freetown was going to place a TIF on the site to encourage the development.

3. The 2008 financial crisis sent the price of copper (and oil) you remember through the roof, thus vastly increasing the cost of construction of the tanks and lines.

4. A brewery in Pennsylvania became available at a much lower cost.

No decent businessman expanding into more markets would pass that up.

Say what you will about Jim Koch, but in 30 years he has created a good company and some (some) decent beers. I only wish in college when he told everyone to be quiet in the ice cream place I was working because his new spot was on the radio and he only distributed locally, that I had asked him for a job.

Isn't that a brewery that they own, not a contract brewery?

Schaefer Brewery to make beer again: Sam Adams beer

Boston Beer, tired of screwing around with tax incentives and sewer service in Freetown Mass, is in an agreement to buy the big former Pabst/Stroh/Schaefer brewery in Fogelsville, PA, outside Allentown, from Diageo, who is currently using it to manufacture Smirnoff Ice. If all goes correctly, the purchase will take place in Spring, 2008.

I've heard that Sam Adams plans to put in a bar on Washington Street in JP(presumably in one of the new apartment buildings that are going up). Anyone know anything about this?

I waited in line for an Exodus bagel behind a woman who told me her son-in-law was opening a brewpub in one of the new developments on Washington, near Green Street. She made it sound like this was an imminent thing. I haven't seen anything publicly said about it, but I trust that Adam will let us know when there's official word.

There is a craft brewery going in on Washington Street between Green Street and English high. They are in process of redeveloping the site. As I understand they will be open late winter/early spring.

Regardless of your faith or lack thereof, all should boycott Jim Koch and Sam Adams after he sponsored a couple to have sex during the holy Catholic Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC during his "Sex for Sam" promotion. He's a real scumbag, pardon the pun. It was a pleasure to be on hand when Jerry Foley at J.J. Foley's smashed the bottles of Sam Adams on Dover Street.

it as victim. They love to bring attention to these types of stories.... Speaking of Kock brewers, I suggest you try the Altar Boy Micro Brew or the Father Porter, Porter or perhaps the Geoghan Hop, though brewers have a stranglehold on that one. Merry Christmas.

At least that ad campaign involved consenting adults.

Funny how many catholics get more upset about adults having consensual sex than they do hundreds of priests raping thousands of kids.

And JJ Foley's serves Sam Adams so maybe its time you stop being so delicate and get over it.

I think I'd like to go to Foley's and hoist a Sam Adams. Is there free parking in the area?

The one in Forest Hills even has a lot. Or take the Orange or Red Lines to the one in Downtown Crossing.
