Arrival of Boston street sweepers heralds spring

Regular street sweeping in Boston resumes today in those parts of the city not lucky enough to be the North End, the South End or Beacon Hill. If you're new to town, you can look up your street-sweeping day.

Also, the Sox open at home today.

all the SoBozos who haven't moved their cars since Thanksgiving have to move their vehicles to the other side of the street for a week. These are the same whine bags who complain about space savers. If you don't move your cars for months at a time, it is safe to say you don't need it. Maybe you should leave it in Mom and Dad's driveway until you need to go somewhere.

I for one will be thrilled to see the plastic dog crap bags and Dunkin' cups finally being picked up. You would think properly disposing of your own trash would be a no-brainer, but...

No.

I've been here a while and things are much cleaner now that there are more Yuppies and fewer old towneee types. Hurling stuff out your car window or never bothering to look for a trash can were treasured entitlements of the old guard.

I'm the original anon poster. There aren't townies in my neighborhood, so I have no opinion on what they do or don't do. Typically I see tourists and students tossing trash on the sidewalks and in front of residential property. How can I tell they're students? They are typically young guys with large backpacks walking in groups of 3 or more. While there are many college students in this neighborhood, it's not considered a college kids neighborhood like Fenway or Allston. Most of the students are pretty well behaved, though it just takes a few to ruin it for the rest of them. Re: tourists - if you can't tell who is a tourist and who isn't, and by tourist that includes suburbanites, then you're not an observant person. As for who leaves behind dog crap bags, I've never witnessed anyone do it, so I don't know. It's a fairly well to do neighborhood with many 'professional' dog walkers... maybe they are responsible. Maybe it's the db who drives the BMW and parks in front of the fire hydrant. As for yuppies, isn't that an outdated term? I thought that was played out in the 80's and 90's. If I see someone tossing garbage on the sidewalk, I say something; if someone parks in front of a fire hydrant I report it; if I see a drunk frat boy pissing on the side of a residential building, I say something. Lived in Boston for nearly 20 years now, same neighborhood, and again, these are just my personal observations.

if there were trash cans around to throw stuff into. After walking for a few blocks can you blame your fellow lazy ass American for just tossing it into the street? I just returned from a trip through Italy, several cities. Trash cans everywhere. It still doesn't eliminate litter but it is VASTLY better than what we see here. Instead of trash cans (which people are terrified of bombs being planted in) they simply have secured rings that a trash bag hangs from in many places I'm sure something similar could be rigged up. Trash cans: what a concept.

you come to a can. Try Japan for your next trip. No public trash cans except in very limited places (like the airport). And no trash on the street. It's surprisingly easy to just tuck an empty bottle or cup in your bag until you get to a trash can.

Regular street sweeping towing in Boston resumes today

Usually April 1 is a weekday, so the sweeping (and towing) starts on that day, resulting in the cruelest of April Fools jokes - "what happened to my car?"

The bottle bill has outlived itself. Most of the trash you see is from the bottle dudes ripping open your trash bag to get the one can they hear while smacking your trash bags with a stick. All the trash spilled onto the streets and sidewalks cannot compare to the occasional bottle or can you see.

In theory, municipal services are supposed to be a benefit, not something you're lucky to avoid.

Wait, those inner neighborhoods already DID have street sweeping? Well, my point still stands.
