ICE nabs undocumented Irishman living in Quincy after OUI charge

RTÉ reports ICE raided a Quincy apartment last week and put two Irish nationals into custody. One was released "pending the outcome of a visa application which he had already submitted prior to his detection," but the other, who was facing an OUI charge, was transported to the Suffolk County House of Correction, where he could sit for several weeks pending a hearing on being deported.

when is the protest?

...they start rounding up Irish women who are applying for restraining orders after being abused, as opposed to picking up OUI Irish men. Don't hold your breath for that to happen.

The victims can stay. The abusers and drunks should go. These are not minor crimes.

I'm not the one who decided that victims of domestic violence should be deported. That's ICE. If they ever start doing that to undocumented Irish women, you may see more of a flap than if they deport an undocumented Irish man arrested for OUI. Make sense now?

existential threat to Quincy.

What a sick and disgusting comment. HOW DARE YOU equate driving a car while intoxicated when no one is injured with beating an innocent human being! Do you know anyone who has suffered from beatings? Have you picked your friend up from the ER after her boyfriend beat the shit out of her yet again? Have you been physically threatened by other people's abusers if you go to the police? Did you ever see a child who has been beaten? A woman who is battered? YOU DISGUST ME, TROLL!

when no one is injured

By your logic, if someone were to put a single bullet in a six shot revolver, spin the barrel, point it at your head, and pull the trigger, and you got lucky, then that wouldn't be much of a crime, since nobody was injured.

Do you know anyone who has suffered from beatings?

Do you know anyone who has been killed by a drunk driver?

Did you ever see a child who has been beaten? A woman who is battered?

Have you ever witnessed the absolute destruction of a family, of a circle of friends, of a life caused by a drunk driver?

You mention in your comment battered again ...... why again ?once would be enough ....
Anyone who strikes a woman drunk or sober , should be incarcerated
If the woman was self supported and had her own property and self esteem these situations would not take place ... she could throw him out of her home. Why are so many women putting up with this draconian behavior ?
To all woman listening ... get an education ; live by yourself until you have a proper marriage ; have your own property only in your name do not associate with drugs or alcoholic men and always be independent .

Are there not enough laws on the books to let Quincy PD round these two clowns up and lock em up?

What's sad is that if these two were citizens they'd be free to drink and drive all they want.

up
Voting closed 0

Wait, why are they both clowns? No excuse for DUI period. Especially not with Uber and Lyft (not that there was an excuse before, but its so easy not to drink and drive now). That said, there is no mention of the other guy doing anything so I'm not sure why he is also a clown.

sorry, one clown. i thought both had OUI charges.

There shouldn't be an excuse for DUI, I agree. But our courts in MA go way too easy on offenders. And repeat offenders.

I'm not sure why RTÉ would find this newsworthy unless it's designed to stoke fears in the age of President Trump. Long before Trump entered politics, it was common knowledge in the illegal immigrant community that if you're here illegally and commit a new crime, you're likely to be held, deported and banned from coming back for 10 years. In fact, since its inception many years ago, the local Irish Emigrant newspaper has had a weekly section with legal advice for those in these situations. Kevin Cullen at the Globe has a sympathetic column about once a year on the topic. As for Trump, I believe it was President Obama who boasted about record deportations.

He's not the (expletive) president anymore. I didn't like his presidency either, but move on, guy.

This comes after 8 years of Obama(and his sycophants) blaming everything on Bush...

up

And that came after 8 years of Bush defenders yelling "But Clinton!"

Shall we keep doing this, or can we just skip straight ahead to George Washington

Yeah ok.

Afghanistan was self defense.

The stock market crash had little if anything to do with Bush (he actually did a few things that might have prevented it until he ran into Congress). If you want a bogeyman on that, talk to Bernanke and the Fed. In all honesty all kinds of blame going back a decade for a massive systemic failure. Banks, mortgage brokers, fund managers, even homebuyers themselves.

As for the other war, yeah maybe Bush, but if you recall, in the end it came down to Saddam refusing to let the inspectors in for the 100th time. He called Bush's bluff. But Bush wasn't bluffing. In hindsight he should've been, but it's easy to monday morning quarterback that one when you aren't responsible for Saddam lobbing a dirty bomb into Tel Aviv -or closer to home.

Which president entered office after his predecessor cleaned up the budget and the debt ...

And which president entered office after his predecessor practically bankrupted the country and the stock market?

And go back to civics class. The congress controls the purse. The president just signs off on the budget. Clinton gets some credit for compromising. But it was a republican congress that actually did the legwork.

Don't forget, the stock market crashed right after Clinton left office too. And that balanced budget owed a lot to excesses that occurred on Clintons watch. Again though, if you want to find the real Bogeyman - look at the Fed and Greenspan and what they did after Long Term Capital crashed.

The market decline of 2000-2002 was driven by overvaluation of technology stocks by Wall Street and the overexposure of theses stocks in mutual funds of 401k investors. A buying frenzy followed by a unimpeded sell off.

The 2008 crash was driven by deregulation of banking and the manipulation of securities into a game of musical chairs. Just because conservative media tells its followers the 2008 crash was driven by Dodd Frank and Fannie Mae doesn't mean its true. Some guy buying an overvalued hose with a mortgage written by a bank that was selling the debt within 24 hours to default swap schemers was not the purpose of Dodd Frank. Manipulation is not intention. According to republicans Dodd Frank caused the Space Shuttle crash, 9/11 and the Kennedy assassination.

Republicans philosophy on deregulation and uncontrolled free markets encouraged and justified business bailout and the screwing of the little guy. Remember the GOP Congress and president rewrote bankruptcy laws in 2005 just in time to allow the bailout of corporations through unchallenged bankruptcy and made individuals "responsible" in bankruptcy.

I was mainly pointing out that we can't blame Clinton in 2000 or Bush in 2008 for these market crashes. I blame mainly the fed although there is plenty of blame to go around.

As for deregulation, Dodd Frank is not terrible. It has its points. But it's a bit of overkill especially in its application.

Deregulation was actually probably ok in 1998. Unfortunately they invented financial nuclear bombs over the next ten years that proliferated and were held on bank balance sheets. The banks were probably fine with just conventional bombs, but should never have been allowed the nuclear option. This was a failure of their regulator. The Fed.

And BTW, Dodd Frank was in response to the financial crisis. It was written to help prevent a repeat and passed in 2010. Again, there are some good provisions, but it has points that are overkill that should be trimmed. It's killing the little guys.

Because Bush left this country in the worst shape its been in for 70 years. Have you already forgotten the Bush Recession and the thousands he sent to needlessly die? The economy rebounded under Obama and he started no wars.

up
Voting closed 0

Bush had somewhere between little and nothing to do with the financial crisis. Read up on it. Ross-Sorkin's too big to fail is a good start. The economy rebounding had zero to do with Obama. It happened because the Fed made money essentially free (which sooner or later will cause the next crisis that will get blamed on a sitting president).

As for thousands to die? As i said, there's fair blame to an extent on Bush for Iraq. But keep in mind, at the end of the day, the senate authorized the war. This wasn't a one man police action.

Or are you forgetting? Or perhaps never remembering?

A drunk driver is a dangerous felon. Most if not all sanctuary city ordinances exclude criminals.

This isn't a broken tail light situation.

They should've chosen to get shitfaced in Somerville or Boston. Then they could have set up residence in city hall and be protected from deportation. That'll teach 'em to drink and drive in Quincy.

This has been going on for years, nothing new. Irish immigrants over stay visa get caught, DUI or any other crime. Arrested, jailed, bailed out, get court date. Then we have a " going away party" have a night out raise some money drive illegal Irish immigrant out to Logan and put them on plane and back home they go. Misses court date gets warrant issued in said name. Don't understand the big deal, playing the game some time you win sometime you loose.

The story is RTÉ News because the Taoiseach Enda Kenny was just in Boston and Washington last week. He brought up the contribution of the Irish in America at his meetings, hoping for a carve-out for undocumented Irish workers in the U.S.
