Herald pulls Brady exclusive that was result of hoax; column suspended

Bad Boston Herald headline

Show me the sources.

Ron Borges won't be writing any columns for the Herald pending further review after the paper had to pull his column today, the one about Tom Brady threatening a tantrum unless he got paid like Jimmy Garoppolo, because it turns out his source was a WEEI caller pretending to be Brady's agent in a text message. Or as the Herald put it:

A column by Ron Borges in today’s Herald regarding Patriot Tom Brady’s salary discussions was based on information which proved to be false. The Herald apologizes to Brady, his agent Don Yee and the Patriots, and to our readers for this erroneous report.

He's not exactly into fact checking.

Let's flash back to a Borges hot take from 2001:

“On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second best tackle in the draft Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour who had 1 1/2 sacks last year in the pass-happy SEC, and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in the draft Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

I wonder what he thinks about their 10 Pro Bowls in retrospect. And Walker would have been a yooge bust in the top 10, more so than being picked 14 (thus would have been a reach anyhow assuming they didn't trade down).

Basically, the time to stop listening to Borges was ages ago.

Sure he's an older reporter and clearly has made some big missteps, but I enjoy when Borges writes columns that reference games/athletes/moments from the 70s-80s. The current bloggers don't have that historical knowledge.

And Borges plagiarizes from them liberally, too.

I've seen some people upset that he was pranked, especially a few other sportswriters, but it's kinda your job as a journalist to ya know, check facts and stuff, or at least it was before we reached the era of in which there is no objective truth.

Not to mention he apparently wrote that he had 'multiple sources', which would just be a flat out lie. And the whole thing is just unbelievable in the first place.

that people care more that a silly sports story was inaccurate, and at the same time don't give a frog's fat ass whether CNN, Fox etc run credible stories.

Brady doesn't need more money - his wife is infinitely filthy richer than he could ever hope to match. His football salary is small compared to endorsements, and smaller yet compared to Gisele's wealth. Garoppolo levels of cash would be meaningless.

A 5 time superbowl champ. Getting paid significantly less than a young guy with no real credentials at all? You can't see how it would make at least a little bit of sense for someone with an ego to want to be paid at least as much as someone else that hasn't proven anything?

Completely agree he doesn't need the money, but from a pride/ego perspective, this would make sense.

When Tom Brady restructured his contract in 2013 in a way that made him the lowest paid franchise QB in the league.

I don't think he cares much about getting the highest contract, I believe that Brady has cared more about winning.

Tom Brady's salary cap hit in 2017 was 19th highest among QB's in 2017. Behind mediocre QB's like Flacco, Sam Bradford, Ryan Tannahill.

History has shown that Brady cares more about winning then he does about being the highest paid QB. Tom Brady has never been the highest paid QB. I don't see why he would change his tune as he nears his 41st birthday.

Even assuming TB decided to make this demand (which I agree is dubious on its face), why would his agent leak to a reporter while negotiations are in progress?

The bizarre thing (beyond me actually listening to sports radio) is that I heard part of this on WEEI this morning and the cohost (Minihan, I think?) was gleefully taking credit for working with this scammer.

In the segment I heard, I thought he was talking about working with this scammer in setting this up and executing it. He had access to messages between the scammer and Borges.

If that was what happened, however, I assume 'EEI would be obliged to suspend him.

So... I'm guessing the scammer did this by himself and then provided the messages to this guy to expose Borges? Is that about it?

His listeners were notorious for pranking and harassing celebrities and news programs on their own but using Howard's name. Pretty similar here from what it sounds like.

The Herald just announced it's suspended Borges's column - no word about Borges himself.

Common sense.

Concentrate on yet another sports "controversy" invloving a cadre of idiots and the Herald takes notice, while racists like Adriana Cohen, Tom Shattuck and Howie Carr still have an audience for their racist drivel.

Or am I wrong?

I mean...see anyone getting upset over this at the Herald or among the local media?

WEEI has supsended Christian Fauria, who this past week impersonated Don Yee on his radio show in an "insensitive" way.

that moron thinks it's funny to affect a Charlie Chan accent when talking about Yee, a Sacramento native with no trace of the cartoon accent that brain damaged racist affected to impress the morons in studio and who listen.

Fuck him and WEEI.

It isn't his fault of course, but lets look at the toll

-WEEI host says something insulting and unfunny about Brady's 5 year old - SUSPENDED indefinitely
-Herald reporter gets pranked by someone posing as Brady's agent, writes a piece, doesn't fact checked - SUSPENDED
-WEEI host reads transcript of texts with guy pretending to be Brady's manager, who is of Chinese descent, in a stereotypical accent - SUSPENDED

People just love to be stupid. It looks like it will be a long time before WEEI sees another guy like Eddie Andelman, a guy so successful that his three stooge sons can live off their dad's good name for decades doing reviews of the same 10 restaurants on a show 3 times a week, and be Trump supporters. Don't you love America?

And now, lets have another in depth review of Emma's Pub and Pizza, alllllllllllwaaaaaaaaaays something happening!
