Hyde Park teen wants to become one of those meddling kids
Javari Lacet made quite the New Year's resolution: He wants to solve mysteries as he tools around town in his own Mystery, Inc. van. Of course, outfitting a rig like that takes money, so he's set up a GoFundMe page to pay the $149,900 cost:
As a kid, my dream was to always solve mysteries in "The Mystery Machine" from "Scooby-Doo". Now I'm 18 years old and old enough to actually green light this idea to be implemented into my life. But of course, I don't have the expensive funds to do so and it could take a while to get there...if I'm on my own.
Being a Bostonian, Lacet, of course, would also use the van to ditch the MBTA:
I'm sick and tired of always taking the busses and trains and paying the little money that i have, especially during 80% of the year in Boston, MA, where it's freezing cold. More than even just for the fun of it, but this would absolutely teach me life skills like strategy, problem solving, furthering my driving skills, etc. I guess what I'm asking is for you to recognize the potential in this dream and help a young man out.

Could probably get much
Could probably get much further in life with a writing class.
Yeah but can get farther
Yeah but can get farther in life with a van.
I bought my car when I was 15
I bought my car when I was 15, no go Fund me pages when I was growing up, $5 an hour job is what I had every day after school from age 13 by age 15 managed to save $700 to buy my own used car, didn’t have to leach off anybody, especially the general public , don’t leach off people. Use your own money ...
And you also walked to school...
...twenty miles, through the snow, uphill, both ways. Of course, the job that you did back then for $5 an hour has since been taken over either by robots or by underemployed old-timers like yourself, so it's not as if kids today can just pick up a job, and $700 back then bought a lot more car than it does now, but let's not let the facts get in the way of a nice sanctimoniousness buzz.
So hard work and saving money
So hard work and saving money is now frowned upon?
$5 an hour job in 1965
That would be like a $20 an hour job now.
Pay was better - and cars were cheaper because they fell apart in 5 years.
"didn't leach off people"
So. Was your income handed over to your parents to support your room and board?
Would it be counted against your family's income because your parent was disabled?
Didn't think so.
He needs to add a bit more money
for the dog food expenses. Great Danes eat a lot of snacks.
At least he can grow-his-own
At least he can grow-his-own snacks to save money.
Wait, are you allowed to grow your own in a greenhouse on wheels, Breaking Bad-style?
scooby snacks
available july 1st
It's unclear to me
What exactly costs 149K. The old van, the paint job, or?? Scooby snacks?
High cost
Scooby Snacks plus whatever Shaggy was smoking.
If you're driving around a $150k van
One of the first mysteries will be: which 14 year-old stole your van for a joyride and crashed it, before others used it as an opioid den and toilet.
.
Parking.
18yr old in Hyde Park ? He
18yr old in Hyde Park ? He will need the money for astronomic cost to insure the vehicle given his age and intended garaging location.
sick and tired of ... paying the little money that i have
so I want to raise $149K to avoid paying a few dollars for mass transit.
gumption
He's got it. You don't.
A teen could approximate that van for 1/100 that
Can get the money working a couple cafe jobs all winter and spring.
Yeah theoretically, but there's a key term there:
"working"
If everyone who can't afford
If everyone who can't afford a car gets one via GoFundMe and ditches the T, that will clearly solve our city's transportation problems.
I was totally on board until you got to the Go Fund Me page.
He probably needs the money to buy rubber masks for old man Smithers to scare everyone off so he can exploit that secret treasure.
Appropriating another pop culture
No, like serious. In fact I think it rises to misappropriation of another pop culture.
His Facebook and the GFM pages are further apart than the episode of Cheers with the St Elsewhere crossover.
Huh?
>I'm sick and tired of always taking the busses and trains and paying the little money that i have, especially during 80% of the year in Boston, MA, where it's freezing cold.
Is he saying it's freezing cold in Boston *80 percent* of the year? Guess a finely overdeveloped sense of hyperbole must be what you pick up on the mean streets of Hyde Park. (Among other things.)
Costs
I feel like paying for the upkeep of a car, parking, gas, maintenance, is far more expensive than taking the T... even with a new car.
Bah Humbug!
$149,900 to get a van tricked out like your favorite cartoon won't help you solve any mysteries. It will get you plenty of attention driving around in it.
On the other hand the same amount of money applied to a 2 or 4 year program in criminal justice may set you up with the skills to solve real crimes and mysteries and in doing so, make you employable so that you can earn enough disposable income to throw away on a toy like this.
The questions you have to ask are these
How much will the van cost?
How much will the paint job cost?
And I'll answer the third question
What will he do with the money left over? Probably attend a 2 or 4 year program in criminal justice. I mean, I don't know this kid from Adam, but say parts 1 and 2 cost $49,900, that leaves $100,000 for educational expenses, which is 2 years at a private college, though he could probably commute to UMass/Boston (using the van) and make it last 4 years.
Perhaps he plans on getting the van
from Count's Customs in Las Vegas. If so, I could see it costing almost $150k.
What kind of mysteries will
What kind of mysteries will he be solving? The latest neighborhood shooting, or who shot bullet holes in his van while it was parked on a side street in Mattapan at 3 A.M. ??
One has to wonder about an 18 year old
whose apparent life goal is to emulate what he saw in a cheesy Hanna-Barbera cartoon that had the same basic plot in every episode.
And the Go Fund Me page for a customized van is just plain wrong on so many levels.
Well, you know
Nobody is making you contribute to the effort.
Shrug.
150K for a van? Better be a
150K for a van? Better be a fully-decked out Sprinter 4x4 with hardwood floors #vanlife bro!
Cheesy?
All episodes without Scooby-Dum, Scrappy Doo or the celebrities cameos were NOT cheesy!
