Jamaica Pond reopened to boats, fishing, dogs

Cormorant in Jamaica Pond

City says it's safe to go fishing in the pond again; good news for this cormorant.

The Boston Public Health Commission reports the toxic blue-green algae bloom that had forced the closing of Jamaica Pond to recreational activities has dissipated. That means people are free to fish and boat and let their dogs fetch sticks without worrying about the potential effects of the cyanobacteria, which can make people sick and kill dogs.

The city had closed the pond in late July due to the bloom, which had turned the water a sickly green.
