With that RMV vendor still all hacked up, state extends grace period for inspections again, to the end of May

The RMV announced today that drivers with expired March and now April inspection stickers will have until May 31 to get their cars inspected.

People who've bought cars between March 23 and today, will have until April 31 to get a sticker, the RMV added.

Applus Technologies, a vendor that facilitates vehicle inspections in MA and several other states, experienced a cyber-attack in several states on March 30, preventing the RMV’s vehicle inspection stations from conducting vehicle inspections statewide. The RMV will hold the vendor accountable for this disruption and is working with Applus to restore services as soon as possible. Applus has indicated that their systems will be operating by Saturday, April 17th in Massachusetts and the Registry will continue working with the vendor to meet this goal.

It has been 15 days since the Registry learned of the Applus cyber-attack, and the outage has had a significant impact to the many business owners who employ staff to deliver vehicle inspection services to the citizens of the Commonwealth.

Any police officer who writes a citation for an expired sticker, fare evasion or minor traffic offense deserves to be nominated for the Darwin Awards.

...when everyone from April and a big chunk of March all wait until May to get inspections - do they all get May stickers, or does the system give them a "backdated" March or April 2022 sticker? Sounds like that'll make May a miserable month to have your inspection due for the next few years if it doesn't.

Yeah, just do your inspection one month earlier next year if lines are a concern.

A backdated sticker is only issued when your vehicle fails inspection and you bring it back for re-inspection in a different month.

I thought they stopped giving you the extra months after 2017 or so.

We went years getting our stickers a month or so late and probably circled the calendar at some point with the old Ford Escort, but I was told you couldn't do that anymore when I got a belated sticker for the Mazda 5 that I inherited and drove cross continent (It had MA plates for a couple of months while still in OR).

It could be off the road (in your driveway) for part of the year. Wouldn’t be fair to shortchange you months if you decided not to use it during that timeframe.

because of a very minor exhaust issue. This was in late March. Wasn't able to get it repaired until mid-April. When I went back, they gave me a March sticker.

Last year, I deferred getting my inspection until May (as allowed for) because of Covid. They gave me a May sticker.

I've gone around the calendar with a few cars, and still doing it. One car that does not get used regularly has gone around twice anyway.

I have had the habit of getting my stick late in past years and yes, you get the month you actually get inspected in.

Don’t forget the people from October. Just realized the other day mine expired back in October 2020. Asked myself why is mine yellow and everyone has a blue or red.

Remember this is the same company which built the last system and had faulty readings for emissions...

Glad to see the state learned their lesson

So are there thousands of unsafe vehicles driving around the state for the indefinite future, or is the whole thing just 100% a scam, or is it somewhere in between?

that took down the outsourced system (that also serves multiple other states), probably by a ransomware attack that encrypted their apps, data and backups. Difficult and expensive to recover from if you're ill-prepared for it: see hugely costly attacks on municipal systems in Baltimore, Atlanta, and countless other cities and towns. It's a big, lucrative business.

Seriously? All this drama over an inspection sticker?

Anyone know where our RMV office will end up seeing as the Rosi CC is still offline.
